Recapish
After
two strong three inning stings out of the bullpen, Jake Simon’s first start of
2017 did not go as well. The 20-year old lefty allowed a pair of four run
innings and the West Virginia Power took this Saturday evening matchup easily,
with a 9-3 final score.
Simon
walked the first batter of the game on four pitches, which proved to be a bad
omen of what was to come. He did bounce back to strike out Ty Moore and then
pick off the runner at first base in the frame, but the good feelings did not
carry over into the 2nd.
Gene
Cone had a big night for Columbia, finishing with three hits for the first time
in 2017 and second time as a pro. He led off the 1st with a single
but was stranded at second base in the frame. Michael Paez took a pitch to the
wrist in the frame, which is arguably the worst place for a batter to get hit
other than the face/head area. He’d leave the game after his next AB but was
back in the lineup Sunday.
The
Power put together a two out rally in the 2nd inning, which gave
them an early 4-0 lead. Simon appeared to be cruising after freezing Clark
Eagan for his second strikeout of the game, but then the next five batters
reached, and the inning only ended because Moore got greedy on the base paths.
Moore provided the big hit in the inning – a bases clearing double – but was
thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple.
Reed
Gamache led off the Fireflies 2nd with a double, but the bottom of
Columbia’s order couldn’t advance him.
Hunter
Owen led off the 3rd inning with a double for West Virginia, and
then Simon hit a batter and issued a walk to load the bases for Eagan. Eagan
connected for a grand slam to double the Power lead and put this game into
blowout territory at 8-0. It’s interesting to note that two of the guys Simon
struck out earlier in the game adjusted and crushed extra base hits in their
next at bat. Andres Gimenez was the first to come over to the mound and give
his pitcher a pat on the back, which is something I’ve noticed him doing
before. Pitching coach Jonathan Hurst also came out and whatever advice he gave
Simon clearly helped, as he retired the next three batters in short order,
finishing the 3rd with a strikeout of Adrian Valerio.
Gimenez
singled in the 3rd to extend his on base streak to… still every game
played in 2017. The inning ended with a Paez strikeout, and he appeared to be
in pain as he walked to the dugout before leaving.
Jay
Jabs took over for Paez in the 4th, and Simon worked around a single
to complete a scoreless inning before leaving. Always nice to leave on a high
note, and Simon struck out Hunter Owen before inducing a pop out to Gimenez to
end his night.
The
Fireflies put together a two out rally of their own in the 4th, when
Brandon Brosher, Tim Tebow, and Milton Ramos connected for three straight
doubles.
Adam
Atkins was the first out of Columbia’s pen in the 5th, and he worked
two scoreless innings while picking up his first two strikeouts with the Fireflies.
He started the season in St. Lucie’s pen, but was recently sent down when the
PSL Mets got a few healthy pitchers back.
Cone
singled again in the 5th, but was stranded at first in the frame.
Joseph
Zanghi took over for the Fireflies in the 7th, and he finished with
four strikeouts over his two scoreless innings.
The
Fireflies had one last spark left in them during their half of the 7th,
but the Power escaped with minimal damage allowed, possibly thanks to a blown
call from the umps. Desmond Lindsay led off the frame with a walk and went to
third on Cone’s third hit of the game. Lindsay would be thrown out at home on a
fielder’s choice, but Cone came home on a Jabs RBI single. That brought Dash
Winningham to the plate with runners on the corners and one out. Officially,
Dash hit a grounder to first that started a double play, as Albert Baur stepped
on the bag and threw to second, where Jabs was tagged out. The play was over
quickly, but Dash had barely ran up the line because he thought it was a foul
ball, something his Manager Jose Leger clearly agreed with. Leger sent Dash
away and argued his case until he was ejected, at which point he got really
angry and let off some steam before leaving the game.
Did he catch it in foul territory? Hard to tell with this pic, but I was sent this tweet, and you can see the reactions below |
Darwin
Ramos worked the 9th and allowed one more run, giving the Power a
9-3 lead. Eagan came through with the two out single against Ramos, but then Ramos
buckled down and struck out Brent Gibbs to end the Power’s scoring for the day.
The
win gave West Virginia a 2-1 series advantage, with these two teams matching up
for one more on Sunday. Harol Gonzalez is scheduled to take the mound for
Columbia, with a 2:05 PM expected game time.
