Recapish

The only thing that could stop the Fireflies offense on Monday evening in Columbia was Mother Nature. The club was piling on and threatening for more in the 7th when rain finally hit the area, and given the score, the umps did not waste too much time before calling the game. The offensive charge was led by Dash Winningham, who became: the first Fireflies batter to have a multi-homer game, the first Fireflies batter this year with three extra base hits, the first Fireflies batter to reach six runs batted in during a game, and the first Fireflies batter to reach double digits in total bases during one game. Everyone in the lineup reached base at least once except Tim Tebow.
Gabriel Llanes had a solid start, though he benefitted from three outs coming on the bases and a pair of double play grounders. Llanes picked off two runners (one at first, one at second) and Ali Sanchez threw out another, which helped cut short potential threats from Augusta. This was just his second start with more than one walk issued, and he hadn’t issued multiple walks in a start since 4/8.
Llanes control problems started with the first batter of the game, who reached on a HBP. Llanes would pick that runner off at first and then quickly finished the frame with a strikeout of Kelvin Beltre.

Everyone has their own routine

Warmup

The Green Jackets jumped ahead 1-0 in the 2nd thanks to a pair of two out hits. Frandy De La Rosa kept the inning alive with a double to CF and then scored on Ashford Fulmer’s single back through the middle. Llanes made it two pickoffs in two innings when he caught Fulmer too far from second to end the frame.

Brandon Van Horn singled between a pair of Llanes strikeouts in the 3rd, but was caught stealing as Johneshwy Fargas went down swinging to end the frame in a K/CS double play.

Slowing down that strikeout pitch

After starting the game 0-8, the Fireflies offense busted out in the 3rd, with a two out single from Milton Ramos getting the train rolling. Ramos stole second base and then went to third when Andres Gimenez took a HBP. With the bases loaded, Michael Paez sent a grounder to the LF corner that cleared the bases and gave Columbia their first lead at 3-1. However, as you can see in the GIF below, the Augusta third baseman thought the ball was foul (can see him pointing to the line as the camera pans by him). This brought Augusta’s Manager Carlos Valderrama out of the dugout and he didn’t leave the field until after he was tossed from the game. When action resumed, Dash Winningham launched another Cola double, this one to CF, and made it a 4-1 game.

Ramos

Paez

Handed a 4-1 lead, Llanes struck out Sandro Fabian to start the 4th, but then walked two before an infield single loaded the bases for Augusta. Fortunately, Llanes escaped the threat with just one run allowed on a sac fly, but that could’ve been a huge letdown inning for the Fireflies.

Ali Sanchez led off the 4th with a single, his first of three hits over the final four innings, but it led to nothing.

Gene Cone led off the 5th with a single, and it sparked the biggest inning of the game. Dash came up with two on three batters later and launched his sixth homer of the season. It was his second straight day with a three run homer, but his day wasn’t done yet. Luis Carpio followed with a single and then went to third on Ali Sanchez’s second double of the year. Carpio came home on a wild pitch, and Sanchez came home after Desmond Lindsay live tested the stress limits of a baseball with one impressive swing.

Ali

The Fireflies had a mini-scare in the 6th, when Tim Tebow and Luis Carpio collided in shallow LF. Both stayed in the game and were OK, but it could’ve ended much worse. After the error, Augusta had two on with nobody out, but then the Fireflies turned a double play and a Frandy fly out ended the threat.

Gimenez saw Tebow coming and bolted

Paez kept the Fireflies half of the 6th inning alive with a two out single to LF and then Dash mashed his second homer of the game.

The Fireflies turned another double play behind Llanes after he issued a leadoff walk in the 7th.

Columbia had at least one last rally in them, but Mother Nature spared the Green Jackets further embarrassment. Sanchez led off the final frame with a single to LF. He went to second when Ramos connected for his second hit of the game three batters later, and then both scored on Cone’s seventh double of the season. However, almost as soon as Cone pulled into second base, the umps called for the tarp, and the game was officially called about 40 minutes later.

After taking the opener in convincing fashion, the Fireflies are in a good position to sweep this series with their two co-aces going the next two days. Jordan Humphreys (7-1, 1.57 ERA) was originally scheduled to start Monday, but was pushed back to Tuesday’s 7:05 PM start, and Merandy Gonzalez is scheduled to start Wednesday’s finale.
