Recapish
Pitching
and defense shined over offense Sunday in Lexington, as these two teams
combined for just seven runs while splitting a double-header. Fireflies starter
Harol Gonzalez worked effectively and efficiently for the Fireflies in game
two, but his offense gave him zero breathing room, which set up a Legends
walkoff in the 7th. Desmond Lindsay had a very nice game, finishing
with a web gem in the 1st and bringing home the Fireflies only run
with an RBI double in the 5th.
Harol
showed good control in this start (one of the two walks issued was
intentional), and seemed to be getting stronger as the start moved along, but
he found himself pitching from behind right from the start. Leadoff batter Rudy
Martin flared a single in the 1st, went to second on a sac bunt, and
then scored on a Kort Peterson single. The frame might’ve ended worse for
Gonzalez if not for a ridiculous diving catch in CF by one of the Mets top
prospects Desmond Lindsay.
Luis
Carpio reached on a bunt single in the 2nd inning, but the other
three Cola batters struck out in the frame. Also shown below is Ali Sanchez’s
first hit of the game from the 3rd inning and Carpio’s second hit
from the 4th inning.
Gonzalez
retired eight straight after the Peterson RBI single, striking out Nick Dini in
the 2nd and then Mark Sanchez and Marten Gasparini in the 3rd
inning.
Peterson
snapped Harol’s streak with a leadoff single in the 4th, but was
later caught trying to steal second. Harol also added a strikeout of Emmanuel
Rivera to his total in the frame.
Sanchez’s
second hit of the game led to the Fireflies only run of game two. Lindsay
followed with a double to CF that brought home Sanchez from first base.
The
Fireflies nice defense continued over the next two frames: Luis Carpio made his
second nice play of the day for the first out of the 5th inning and
Andres Gimenez started an inning ending double play in the 6th.
After
Lindsay’s double, Legends starter Andre Davis set down eight straight to keep
it a 1-1 game heading to the bottom of the 7th. Gonzalez started the
frame at 69 pitches, so he had been cruising. He struck out the first batter of
the frame swinging, but then a Nick Dini double put the game in jeopardy. Harol
walked the next batter intentionally to set up force outs at second at third,
but then Manny Olloque ended the game with a single to RF.
Although
they lost the finale, the Fireflies split the double-header and won their
series in Lexington. They head home Monday to start a series with Augusta. Co-ace
Jordan Humphreys (7-1, 1.57 ERA) gets the ball in the opener, which has a 5:05
PM scheduled game time.
