Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies arrived in Trenton just two games behind the Thunder
for best record in the Eastern League. Binghamton took a hard-fought 3-0 lead
with them into the 8th, but starter Donovan Hand was replaced with
two outs and the inning exploded in Tim Peterson’s face. Still, the teams were
tied heading to the 9th, but Manager Luis Rojas kept Peterson in the
game for some reason, and an error opened the door for the winning run to
score.
Donovan
Hand was fantastic in this start, allowing more than one base runner in an
inning just once (the 2nd), and keeping the Trenton hitters off
balance for seven strikeouts. He matched zero’s over the first five innings
with recently promoted Domingo Acevedo, who is one of the more interesting arms
in the Yankees system.
Acevedo
kept Binghamton off the board until the 6th, but they did have a
pair of scoring chances before that. Luis Guillorme and Kevin Kaczmarski
started the game with back-to-back singles, but then Kacz was picked off and
Nido hit a fly out to shallow to get Guillorme home. Also shown below is Guillorme handling a grounder.
In
the 3rd, Patrick Biondi and Guillorme provided the back-to-back
singles, but this time Biondi was thrown out on the bases, trying to steal
third.
Guillorme’s
third hit of the day finally struck gold, as it sparked the Rumble Ponies three
run rally. Kacz followed with a double to advance Guillorme to third, and then
he came home on a Nido groundout to make it 1-0. Cody Decker followed with an
RBI double to make it 2-0, and then Kevin Taylor finished off the rally with an
RBI single to left. Also shown below is Kaczmarski's third hit from the 8th.
As
mentioned, Hand left after allowing a two out single in the 8th. Given
his pitch count (94), he probably could’ve been left in, but I’m not trying to
question that call. Given the dominance of the Binghamton bullpen this year
(sub-3.00 ERA), and especially Tim Peterson, a three run lead with four outs to
go should’ve been pretty automatic.
However, sometimes pitchers aren’t
as effective when they come in with runners already on base. Also, sometimes,
guys are left in too long when they clearly don’t have it that night. Peterson
is usually effective regardless of the situation, but I think it’s fair to say
that he didn’t have his best stuff last night. He issued a walk, threw a wild
pitch, and allowed three hits before finally getting the third out of the 8th
on a scorching liner hit right at David Thompson.
Last out before Hand left |
Peterson didn’t have his best stuff and he gave up the lead, but the game was still tied heading to the 9th, and I have to question the call to send him back out for the 9th. I definitely don’t have all the details on who’s available each night from the Bingo pen, but I imagine at least one other arm was. He’d only pitched across multiple innings in 3 of 15 appearances this year too, so it’s not like he’s used to sitting down in the dugout and going out for another inning.
Abiatal
Avelino ended up on second after a missed catch error from Matt Oberste to
start the frame, so it was going to take a huge effort just to keep him from
scoring in the frame. Francisco Diaz advanced Avelino to third with a sac bunt,
and then the game ended on a Thairo Estrada single into center.
These
two teams are back at it Wednesday night at 7:00 PM, with Corey Oswalt (4-3,
2.25 ERA) scheduled to make the start for Binghamton.
