Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies welcomed an old friend Sunday evening, as Seth Lugo returned to the park where he made his name for his second rehab start of 2017. Lugo broke out as a prospect while with the Binghamton Mets in 2015, and the Mets faithful were loud in their support of him throughout the game. Unfortunately for Binghamton, Lugo’s control hit a speed bump in the 4th inning, which opened the door for a Hartford rally. The Yard Goats finished with three runs in the 4th, which were the only three runs they scored, and just enough support for Hartford starter Ryan Castellani. With all the eyes there to see the big leaguer, Castellani stole the show with 8 very sharp innings on just 85 pitches.
Lugo started his night with a quick 1st, retiring the side on just 12 pitches. Twitter user @Katiek485 posted this video of Lugo facing the first batter of the game, and he finished the 1st with a strikeout of Ryan McMahon on his first curve of the game.

Tomas Nido has been red-hot since the end of April and extended his hit streak to 8 games with a two out single in the 1st inning.

Lugo retired the first batter of the 2nd inning but was then charged back-to-back singles – the second of those singles should probably be ruled a fielder’s choice or error. Correlle Prime hit a grounder to Gustavo Nunez, playing SS over Luis Guillorme so Guillorme can get experience at second base, with Max White runner from first base and Nunez tried to get the out at second, but Guillorme couldn’t handle the low throw. Lugo picked up his teammates with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.
He needed just six pitches for a perfect 3rd inning, which featured a pop out and two groundouts.
As previously mentioned, Lugo’s Sunday evening cruise hit a speed bump in the 4th, as he had trouble locating in the frame. The first two Hartford batters reached on a single and double before Lugo issued his first walk to load the bases. Hartford scored a run on each of the next three plays: single to LF, bases loaded walk, and a sac bunt from Castellani.
During the wildness, Binghamton radio guy Tim Heiman noted that, “Lugo just threw a long string of curves.” His point being that Lugo was probably trying to work on something with the curve during the frame while not really paying attention to the batted ball results.
Lugo allowed a double in the 5th, but he struck out the other three batters in the frame.
The Ponies finally broke through against Castellani with two outs in the 5th. Gustavo Nunez kept the frame alive with his second single of the night and then David Thompson brought him home with a single to RF that slipped under a diving Max White.

Lugo’s final inning started out poorly but he kept Hartford off the scoreboard with some help from his defense. Prime was caught stealing third in the frame on the same pitch Castellani went down swinging on.

Nido and Taylor connected for two out singles in the 6th, but Binghamton couldn’t get them home.

Luis Mateo took over for Lugo in the 7th and he combined with Kelly Secrest for three scoreless innings of relief.

The Rumble Ponies offense went down quietly against Castellani through the 8th, but then Hartford went to James Farris for the 9th. Nido reached on an error to start the frame, but was still on first base two outs later. That’s when Matt Oberste made things interesting with a check-swing double to RF, bringing home Nido to make it a 3-2 game. Champ Stuart was sent in as a pinch-runner for Oberste, and that proved important on the final play of the game. Nunez hit a grounder to second that was bobbled by McMahon, which normally would’ve put runners on the corners with two outs for David Thompson. But since Champ was the runner at second, he had a legit chance to score on the bobbled grounder, so there was a play at the plate, and McMahon got his throw home just in time for the out.

With their 7-game win streak snapped, the Rumble Ponies look to start a new streak Monday before league-leading Trenton comes to town later this week. P.J. Conlon (5-2, 3.02 ERA) gets the ball on a Memorial day afternoon game, with game time scheduled for 1:05 PM.
