Recapish
After
battling back from a 1st inning deficit, the Binghamton Rumble
Ponies bullpen blew a 5-3 lead in the 8th inning, allowing the Sea
Dogs to even this series at one game apiece. The Ponies opening day closer
Corey Taylor continued his 2017 struggles in the 8th, allowing 4
singles, a walk, and uncorking a wild pitch while taking the loss.
The
Rumble Ponies were given a huge opportunity to score in the 1st
inning after shortstop Deiner Lopez made a throwing error on each of the first
two plays, but Tomas Nido cut any potential rally short when he grounded into a
double play.
Binghamton
and starter Casey Delgado then opened the door for a big inning in the bottom
half of the 1st by committing an error (fielding error on Jio Mier)
after Delgado had unleashed two wild pitches. Rafael Devers had Portland’s only
RBI hit in the frame, but Josh Tobias, Nick Longhi, and Cole Sturgeon also
singled. Delgado finished the frame with a strikeout of Joseph Monge.
The
Ponies were quick to answer in the next half inning. Matt Oberste led off the
frame with a triple and then came home on a Kevin Kaczmarski groundout.
Delgado
made it three straight strikeouts when he started the 2nd inning
with strikeouts of Jake DePew and Lopez. Danny Mars doubled and was stranded at
3B in the frame for Portland.
Champ
Stuart and Luis Guillorme singled with one out in the 3rd inning,
but another Nido double play grounder killed any potential rally. He is an
interesting prospect, but like most catchers, Nido is a slow runner.
Delgado
stranded Longhi at 2B after he singled in the 3rd, ending the frame
with a strikeout of Mike Olt.
Kevin
Taylor tied the game with a solo homer leading off the 4th, his
second of the year. Kaczmarski singled to CF in the frame but never made it
beyond 1B.
Mier
and Guillorme connected on a double play to help erase on a Monge single in the
4th.
Guillorme
added his second hit of the game in the 5th inning, advancing Colton
Plaia to 3B after he led off the inning with a walk. Nido came through this
time, providing a sac fly to bring home to go-ahead run.
The
Sea Dogs answered right back in their half of the 5th, when Longhi
singled home Josh Tobias. Tobias led off the frame with a bunt single and was
then awarded second base when Delgado was charged with a balk – a call that he
did not agree with, to say the least. Without the balk, he might not have been
in scoring position for Longhi’s hit.
Oberste
started the Rumble Ponies last rally of the night with a leadoff single in the
6th inning. After the single, Casey Delgado was ejected by third
base ump Takahito Matsuda (apparently because he was still complaining about
the balk call), which led to an ejection for Manager Luis Rojas, who jumped to
his pitcher’s defense and started arguing with Matsuda and then home plate ump Rich Grassa. When
the action resumed, Kaczmarski picked up his second hit of the game, advancing
Oberste to third base with a single. Both runners came home two batters later,
when Mier singled to LF. Unfortunately for Binghamton, Mier was then picked off
at first base for the second out of the inning. The mistake looked worse when
Plaia followed with a double, and then went to third base on Champ’s second hit
of the game – it was also the final Binghamton hit of the game. Those two were
stranded in scoring position when Guillorme went down swinging to end the
rally.
Luis
Mateo took over for Delgado in the 6th inning, faced six batters,
and nobody put the ball in play against him. He struck out four and walked the
other two before Kelly Secrest replaced him in the 7th. Secrest kept
the 5-3 lead intact, stranding Danny Mars at third base in the frame.
Corey
Taylor took over in the 8th with the bottom half of the Sea Dogs
lineup due up, and eight batters later he walked off the mound with his team
behind 6-5. Monge, DePew, and Lopez hit consecutive one-out singles to make it
a 5-4 game, but then Taylor struck out Mars for the second out of the frame.
Unfortunately, before Mars went down swinging, Taylor’s wild pitch allowed both
runners to move into scoring position. This proved huge when Tobias came
through with a single to CF that brought both runners home – the guy who made
two errors in the 1st put Portland up by a run in the 8th.
This
game came down to a battle of bullpens, and on this night, the Sea Dogs pen was
more effective. After their 6th inning rally, the Rumble Ponies went
0-10 with 4 strikeouts against the Sea Dogs pen. These two teams square off in
a rubber match game Wednesday at 6:00 PM, with Mickey Jannis (3-1, 2.86 ERA)
scheduled to make the start for Binghamton on short rest (he went 5 innings on
5/6).
