Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies pushed their record to 7 games over .500 and moved
into a tie for 1st in their division behind a great start from Corey
Oswalt Monday in Portland. Oswalt and Sea Dogs starter Kevin McAvoy battled for
7 innings, with neither budging an inch, so the game came down to a battle of
bullpens. The Binghamton bullpen has been a huge strong point lately, and they
shined over two scoreless innings in this one, allowing the Rumble Ponies to
jump ahead 2-0 in the 9th, and take the opener of this series.
Thanks
to a pair of bad 1st innings, Oswalt allowed 8 runs over his first 5
innings this year, but has allowed just 3 runs over his last 30.1 IP. The
23-year old, 6’5 righty did walk a season high 3 batters in this start, but was
otherwise very good. He was facing a very tough Portland lineup, which featured
some guys he pitched against while in the SAL two years ago, but the Sea Dogs
managed only a few scoring chances in this one.
Oswalt
finished the 2nd with his first two strikeouts, Nick Longhi and
Jordan Procyshen were the victims.
Patrick
Biondi had the games first hit when he singled in the 3rd.
Portland
loaded the bases with two outs in the 3rd inning, but then Oswalt
stepped it up and struck out Mike Olt to end the frame.
Rafael
Devers took a leadoff walk in the 4th, but was thrown out trying to
steal 2B by Tomas Nido – footage got weird on the camera switch, so I can’t
show the whole play.
Deiner
Lopez was Oswalt’s final strikeout victim, going down looking for the second
out of the 5th. Oswalt then worked around a single in each of his
final two innings before handing the ball off to the bullpen for the 8th.
The
Rumble Ponies offense was quiet all night, but Tomas Nido and David Thompson
tried to create some two out magic with doubles in the 7th and 8th
innings, respectively.
Kyle
Regnault was the first out of Bingo’s pen and he worked a perfect 8th,
striking out Josh Tobias along the way.
The
Rumble Ponies then had the games only rally, which was sparked by Sunday’s hero
Dale Burdick. Burdick walked, went to 2B on a sac bunt, to 3B on a Luis
Guillorme single, and then scored on a Tomas Nido single. Guillorme also came
around to score an insurance run on a Kevin Taylor sac fly.
With
the first lead of the game, closer Alberto Baldonado came out for the 9th
and bookended the inning with strikeouts for his 5th save of the
year.
After
taking the opener, Binghamton turns to Casey Delgado (1-4, 8.03 ERA) to make it
3 straight wins on Tuesday night, first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
