Recapish
After
getting seven dominant innings from co-ace Jordan Humphreys in game one of
their Wednesday morning double-header, the Columbia Fireflies looked to Gabriel
Llanes to keep the good feels rolling against the River Dogs in game two.
Unfortunately, errors and a lot of singles knocked him out down 8-2 after just
three innings. The Fireflies offense showed signs of life and never giving up,
but the rain was coming down hard by the time this game became official, and
with no signs of the rain letting up, the game was called after the 5th.
Llanes’
bad luck started in the 1st, when Charleston scored a run on two
singles, both of which were well-placed dribblers that would’ve died on the
fringe of the OF grass. He did strand a runner at third in the frame after a
Desmond Lindsay error.
The
Fireflies were quick to get that run back in their half of the 1st,
a small rally that started with a Gene Cone single. Cone went to second on a
walk to Carpio, to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a balk.
Llanes
allowed a leadoff single in the 2nd, but then retired the next two
and should’ve been out of the inning after a groundout to Paez. Unfortunately, a
Paez fielding error kept the frame alive and then Ben Ruta and Estevan Florial
followed with RBI hits to make it a 4-1 game.
Tim
Tebow reached base in all three of his AB’s, and he helped get some offense
going with a single leading off both the 2nd and 4th
innings. Tebow went to second on another balk, to third on a passed ball, and
then scored on a sac fly.
The
River Dogs did not waste time adding on against Llanes in the 3rd,
as the first four batters connected for hits against the Cola starter, capped
by a two run double off the bat of Diego Castillo. All four runners scored in
the frame, and Llanes left the game after the 3rd was over, down
8-2.
Luis
Carpio singled with Cone on first and no outs in the 3rd, but
Columbia couldn’t get a run out of the situation.
Darwin
Ramos took over for Llanes in the 4th and worked a scoreless inning.
He allowed a single but then started a double play to erase that base runner.
The
game went on a rain break for a few minutes during the bottom of the 4th,
which may have messed with the River Dogs starter. The rain came after the
leadoff single to Tebow, and then Jio Orozco issued two walks and allowed an
RBI double to the first three batters after the delay. After Cone struck out,
Luis Carpio flied out to LF, but two more Cola runs came home while he was at
the plate. Orozco uncorked a wild pitch for the first run, and the second run
came home on a sac fly.
The
River Dogs got two of those runs right back in the 5th, which
essentially put this game on ice. It might've been worse, but Desmond Lindsay threw a runner out trying to score in the frame. Even if the rain hadn’t came, and even if
this had been a 9-inning game, it would’ve been extremely unlikely the
Fireflies offense could keep rallying and clawing their way back in this game.
Due
to the rain, this series was limited to the double-header Wednesday, and these
two teams split that. The Fireflies head out to Lexington next for a series
with the Legends (who have MiLB.tv). Merandy Gonzalez (5-1, 1.59 ERA) is expected
to start in the opener for Columbia, which is scheduled for Thursday night at
7:05 PM.
