Recapish
A
quality start from lefty Blake Taylor was not enough for the Columbia Fireflies
Friday night, as they had a power-outage against the Power’s Cam Vieaux and
bullpen. The Fireflies offense showed some smoke early, but fizzled out by the
middle of the game, with 10 of the final 12 batters being retired over the
final 4 innings.
The
Power got to Blake Taylor in the 1st, when Hunter Owen took him deep
to LF for a 2-0 lead. Taylor bounced back with a strikeout of Albert Baur, but
never really had an easy inning Friday night.
The
Fireflies were quick to get one of those runs back in the 1st, when
Michael Paez crushed a double with two outs to bring home Andres Gimenez
(single). Unfortunately, that was the only run they could scratch out against
the Power on this night.
Carlos
Munoz went down swinging against Taylor to start the 2nd, which was
one of two frames from Taylor with just four batters faced.
Reed
Gamache and Brandon Brosher started the Cola 2nd with singles but
the Power turned two straight grounders into three outs to escape the jam.
After
retiring the first two batters of the 3rd, Taylor hit a batter,
uncorked a wild pitch, and then walked a batter, which opened the door for a
third Power run when Reed Gamache made a throwing error on the next play.
Taylor then ended the frame with another strikeout of Munoz.
Desmond
Lindsay dropped a ball in deep CF that was initially ruled an error, but is now
marked down as a Chris Harvey triple in the 4th. Taylor responded
with a strikeout of Alexis Bastardo, but then he walked Ty Moore to keep the
frame alive. He would strand the runners on the corners after inducing a fly
out to Tim Tebow in LF.
Dash
Winningham picked up his sixth double of the year in the bottom of the 4th,
but never advanced beyond second base.
Taylor
struck out Albert Baur in the 5th and then worked around a two out
hit for another scoreless frame.
Gene
Cone picked up the final two hits for Columbia, singling in both the 5th
and 7th innings.
Taylor
then finished his night with strikeouts of Harvey and Adrian Valerio in the 6th
inning, stranding two runners in the frame.
Thanks
to a double play in the 7th, Fireflies relievers Taylor Henry and
Matt Blackham combined to face the minimum over the final three innings, with
Blackham picking up a pair of strikeouts in the 9th. Of course,
pitching wasn’t the problem for the Fireflies Friday night, and the offense
went down quietly to end the game.
