Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies made it three straight in Richmond and completed their double-header sweep with a 5-0 win over the Flying Squirrels Wednesday night. After squeaking out a 1-0 win in the opener, Binghamton found itself in another nail-biter early in game two, but then rallied for five runs over the final three frames. They might’ve had more in the 7th too, but rain came and ended the game early – the Columbia Fireflies also played a double-header Wednesday, and their second game had to be finished early due to rain as well. Feed was choppy again.
Game one starter P.J. Conlon finished his start with five perfect frames and then game two starter Donovan Hand started his game with three hitless frames, so technically the two nearly combined on a multi-game no-no. The only time Hand was in trouble was in the 4th, when he allowed the first two to reach on a double then single. He escaped the jam thanks to a pop out, a runner thrown out by his catcher, and a fly out to center field.

Binghamton managed just a pair of singles over the first four innings, with Champ Stuart and Asdrubal Cabrera leading off the 1st and 4th innings, respectively.

L.J. Mazzilli sparked a three run rally in the 5th with a leadoff single. David Thompson knocked Mazzilli in with his seventh double of the year, and then went to third on a Colton Plaia single. Hand was up next and he laid down a perfect bunt as Thompson charged home from third, which allowed the run to score easily and Hand to end up on first. Binghamton scratched out one more run in the frame thanks to a pair of wild pitches from reliever Collin Balester to make it a 3-0 game.

Mazzilli singled to keep the 6th inning alive and then came home two batters later on a Colton Plaia RBI hit. Jio Mier made it a 5-0 game when he homered in the 7th, and then the game was called after a Kevin Taylor single.

With a double-header sweep and series win in the books, Binghamton looks to Corey Oswalt (3-3, 2.18 ERA) to complete the series sweep Thursday night in Richmond, with game time scheduled for 6:35 PM.
