Recapish
After
a rainout Saturday, the Columbia Fireflies and Lexington Legends played two
7-inning games on Sunday afternoon. Twenty-year-old lefty Jake Simon got the
nod for the Fireflies and set a season high with 5.1 IP. He handed a 3-0 lead
to Adonis Uceta in the 6th and Uceta stranded the bases loaded on
back-to-back strikeouts to keep the shutout intact. Dash Winningham provided
the offense for Columbia with his fifth homer of the year in the 4th,
which was the only other frame either side got anything going.
The
Fireflies offense came out ice cold, striking out six times over the first
three innings, with just a Dash Winningham single to show for their efforts
against Legends starter Travis Eckert.
Columbia
had a banner day defensively, making top-notch plays throughout both games.
Simon set the tone with his effort on a bunt attempt from the first batter of
the 1st inning.
Simon
struck out Mebrys Viloria and Manny Olloque while working around a two out
single in the 2nd.
The
defense really stood out in the 3rd, when Milton Ramos and Luis
Carpio made back-to-back web gems – Ramos’ play at third is about as good a
play as you’ll see from the hot corner. Simon then allowed a two out single to
Khalil Lee, but he’d pick Lee off at first base to end the frame.
Andres
Gimenez sparked the Fireflies rally with a leadoff double. After Michael Paez
worked a walk, Dash launched his homer to deep right center to make it a 3-0
game. Jay Jabs added a double three batters later, but Tebow couldn’t get him
in with two outs.
Angelo
Castellano worked a leadoff walk in the Legends 4th, but Simon
bounced back with a strikeout of Kort Peterson, and then Emmanuel Rivera
grounded into an inning ending double play.
Paez
singled in the 5th, which advanced Gene Cone (walk) to third, but
Dash’s bid for another three-run bomb came up a little short – he went ~390’ to
CF. Also shown is Gimenez’s second hit, which came in the 7th.
Viloria
took a HBP on his left arm (elbow area) twice in this game, with the first
coming to lead off the 5th. Simon took care of Viloria with another
pickoff – his third of the season – and then struck out Gabriel Cancel during
another quick frame.
Simon
started the 6th with a strikeout of Marten Gasparini, bringing his
total to five for the game, but he was removed after walking the next two.
Uceta took over and walked the first batter he faced out of the pen to load up
the bases, but was able to come through with back-to-back strikeouts of
Peterson and Rivera to escape the jam.
Matt
Blackham took over for the Fireflies in the 7th and he started the
frame by hitting Viloria. Viloria went straight to the bench for a
pinch-runner, and then weirdness ensued. Before a pitch to Cancel, Blackham
made a pickoff attempt to first, but the runner was called safe. Then Jose
Leger came out to complain about something and the umps seemed to agree with
what he was saying. They called the Legends Manager over (he was coaching third
base), explained the situation, and after a long conversation, they ruled the
runner at first base out.
The MiLB boxscore log does not
help, but the Legends announcers seemed to think the runner was ruled out
because of a uniform malfunction: he was wearing the wrong number. Andres
Gimenez wore #5 in the first game – apparently that’s his new number – but was
wearing #13 again in game two with no problems. I’ve been in the press box when
a player brought the wrong jersey to the stadium and had to wear an alternate
number, and it was the teams’ responsibility to let everyone know before the
game started.
While the umps were discussing
things with the Managers, Blackham stayed warm with a few tosses. He made quick
work of the final two batters when play resumed, striking out Olloque looking
to end the game.
After
their game one win, Columbia looked to Harol Gonzalez to make it a
double-header sweep in game two.
