Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s connected for eight doubles Sunday afternoon, including a pair
each from top-prospect Amed Rosario and rehabbing Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud,
as well as one each from top prospects Gavin Cecchini and Dominic Smith. 51s
ace Tyler Pill continued his strong 2017 with 6+ innings of one run ball, with
a high walk total the only red mark on his final line. This opportunity to
pitch to d’Arnaud may prove important for Pill’s season (career?), as
d’Arnaud’s evaluation could tip the scales one way or the other as to whether
the Mets give him some major league starts.
Travis
d’Arnaud is expected to stay at least until Tuesday, when Steven Matz is
scheduled to start for Las Vegas. He made his presence known in a big way at
the plate Sunday, but also contributed from behind the plate, and I’m not just
talking about his pitch framing. The Mets catcher is not known for his ability
to control the running game, but if he can make more throws like this one to
end the 1st, that will change (not holding my breath about that just
yet though).
Jayce
Boyd ripped a double off the LF wall to start the 51s 3rd, which
opened the door for a big inning. Las Vegas waited until there were two outs in
the frame, but then connected for four straight hits: back-to-back singles from
Cecchini and d’Arnaud, followed by back-to-back doubles from Rosario and Sith.
New
Orleans loaded the bases with one out in their half of the 3rd, but
then Tyler Pill limited the damage to one run by inducing a pair of groundouts.
Pill issued a walk to load the bases in the frame, but it also put a force out
on each base.
Another
two out rally for Las Vegas in the 4th put this game mostly out of
reach. Desmond Jennings led off the inning with a single, went to second base
on a wild pitch, to third on a sac bunt, and then scored on another wild pitch.
Cecchini and d’Arnaud followed with RBI doubles to cap the 51s scoring. Cecchini might've had another extra base hit in this game but Destin Hood robbed him of a hit (first GIF).
Taijeron,
Rosario, and d’Arnaud would connect for doubles later in the game, but they led
to nothing. David Roseboom and Erik Goeddel each went 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, and they were able to withstand a late push from the Baby Cakes thanks to the big lead.
Despite
the rough start to the season, Las Vegas is beating up on a team it should be,
and the 51s have a chance for a 4-game sweep Monday night. Wilfredo Boscan (0-2,
4.37 ERA) is currently scheduled to make the 8:00 PM start for Las Vegas, and
then the team travels to Round Rock for their next series and Steven Matz!!
