Recapish
After
word came out that Brandon Nimmo had stopped his rehab due to a sore knee
Monday afternoon, Brandon Nimmo led off and played center fielder for the Las
Vegas 51s. Not only that, he hit the second pitch of the game oppo taco for his
first homer of the season. The 51s added another run in the 1st to
give Ricky Knapp a 2-0 lead before he took the mound, but that lead was gone
just three batters after he took the mound, which was the start of a rough
outing for the 24-year old righty.
After
Nimmo went deep, Desmond Jennings tripled and scored on an Amed Rosario sac
fly.
Knapp
allowed a two run blast to Mike Tauchman in the bottom half of the frame, which
tied things at 2.
L.J.
Mazzilli and Knapp singled in the 2nd, but the 51s could get neither
home – it was Knapp’s first hit in 18 at bats.
Dominic
Smith picked up his single with two outs in the 3rd inning. He crushed a single off the wall one batter after an unfortunate deflection kept Rosario from a hit.
The
Isotopes took their first lead in the 3rd, when Raimel Tapia started
a 3-run rally with his 13th double of the year. Noel Cuevas and
Jordan Patterson connected for back-to-back RBI hits in the frame, making it a
5-2 game.
Tauchman
added an RBI double against Knapp before he left.
Tim
Peterson was the first out of the 51s pen and he worked a perfect 6th
inning, striking out Rosell Herrera along the way. It was his first Triple-A strikeout and he got some help from Nimmo during the frame.
After
more than a month on the DL, Victor Cruzado was used as a pinch-hitter for
Peterson in the 7th and picked up his first hit of the season.
The
Isotopes capped their scoring with two more runs against Erik Goeddel in the 7th
– he has been struggling all season for Las Vegas.
Xorge
Carrillo took a bases loaded walk to bring home a run in the 8th,
but that was all Las Vegas could get out of the threat - Travis Taijeron had the only hit in the inning.
With
two outs in the 9th, Amed Rosario launched an absolute no-doubter off
the scoreboard in left center, which is just to the left of a ‘428 ft’ marker
on the wall.
Although
Brandon Nimmo and Amed Rosario provided some punch for Vegas, the 51s
ultimately dropped their third straight to fall into last place in their
division. They are just 3.5 games behind the Isotopes, who took over the
division lead in this series. These two wrap up the series Tuesday afternoon,
with Sean Gilmartin (0-1, 8.10 ERA) scheduled to make the 1:05 PM start for Las
Vegas.
