Recapish
While
Jordan Humphreys and Merandy Gonzalez have received a lot of attention for
their success in securing a win nearly every time they start for Columbia this
year, Blake Taylor has quietly had the opposite problem: even when he’s pitched
well, he’s come up on the short end. Unfortunately for the Fireflies, he didn’t
pitch that well in Lexington Friday night, allowing a pair of homers among
eight hits over 5.1 IP, with two walks issued, and he took his sixth loss of
the year.
Lexington
jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st thanks to their first homerun
against Taylor. Legends center fielder Khalil Lee had a big day, finishing with
three hits, the first of which came in the 1st inning, when he also
stole a base. With Lee on third and one out, Taylor was able to strikeout Kort
Peterson, but then Emmanuel Rivera got to him for a two out blast to left center
to make it 2-0.
Luis
Carpio picked up the Fireflies first hit of the game in the 2nd
inning, but he was erased on a double play.
Taylor
induced four grounders for three outs in the 2nd inning. The
one time Lee was retired came during the 3rd, when he went down
swinging against Taylor.
Michael
Paez had a great PA in the 4th that led to a walk, and then he came
home on a Dash Winningham double, his eighth of the year and second straight
day with an RBI double.
Taylor
allowed a double in the 4th, but he struck out Meibrys Viloria and
Joe Dudek before a pop out ended the frame.
Ali
Sanchez and Gene Cone singled in the 5th, but it led to nothing for
Columbia.
Lee
had the last laugh against Taylor when he took him deep in the 5th
to make it a 4-1 game. Rivera was caught stealing to end the frame, putting Ali
Sanchez at a 52% CS-rate this year (13 of 25 runners thrown out); on the
downside, he committed his second error of 2017 on the Lee stolen base earlier
in the game.
Adam
Atkins took over for Taylor with runners on the corners and one out in the 6th
and the Fireflies quickly turned an inning ending double play behind him.
Atkins
stayed on for the 7th and struck out Angelo Castellano, but then
Kort Peterson doubled home a run with two outs to make it a 5-1 game. Joseph
Zanghi came in for the 8th and worked a perfect frame, striking out
Dudek along the way.
The
Fireflies scratched out one last run in the 8th. Desmond Lindsay led
off the frame with his second walk of the game, went to second on a fielding
error, to third on an Andres Gimenez single, and scored on a groundout.
With
this series now split, the Fireflies will look to Jake Simon to get the edge
back with a strong start on Saturday night, game time scheduled for 6:35 PM.
