Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies made it two straight wins in New Hampshire Sunday
afternoon thanks to an explosive 10-run 5th inning. Dale Burdick
started the inning with his first ever Double-A hit, launching a homer to LF
that left the Fisher Cats announcer’s impressed: surrounded by a few seconds of
silence, the announcer could only get out a “Wow,” before finally adding,
“that’s easily the longest homerun we’ve seen here this year.” Jiovanni Mier
later hit a grand slam in the 5th, and then Burdick went deep again
before it was over. The offensive explosion was more than enough for Donovan
Hand, who cruised through this start outside of a long 2nd inning.
The
Fisher Cats would strike first in this one, and appeared to be taking control
before the 5th inning happened. They put together a 2nd
inning rally after loading the bases with nobody out. Taking his first AB since
joining the Cats, Patrick Cantwell provided the big hit in the frame, doubling
home a pair of runs. On dry grass, the hit is just a single and Patrick Biondi
may have a chance to throw out a runner at home, but Biondi slipped on the wet
grass after fielding the ball, allowing everyone to move up a base. A Derrick
Loveless sac fly followed that mess to make it 3-0.
New
Hampshire made it 4-0 by taking advantage of a Patrick Biondi fielding error in
the 3rd inning – Harold Ramirez singled home Ryan McBroom in the
frame.
Kevin
Taylor put the Rumble Ponies on the board in the 4th, launching his
first Double-A homer to LF to make it 4-1. Cody Decker walked and Kevin
Kaczmarski added a single in the frame, but Decker would be stranded at third
base.
Binghamton
sent 14 men to the plate in the 5th and 10 came around to score. As
mentioned, Dale Burdick went deep twice and Mier hit a grand slam. Additionally,
Biondi picked up his second and third hits of the game, Decker doubled home a
run, Luis Guillorme picked up an RBI single, and Tomas Nido went 1-1 with a
walk. The only Ponies batter to go hitless on Sunday was Colton Plaia, but even
he reached on a walk in the frame. The only Ponies batter to make an out in the
frame was Kevin Taylor, who was responsible for all 3 thanks to a sac fly and a
GIDP.
After
getting the intentional walk during the 5th (right before Mier’s
grand slam) Kaczmarski added a double in the 6th.
Despite
the big lead, Burdick’s big day wasn’t over and neither was the Rumble Ponies.
Burdick led off the 7th with a single, and then came around to score
two batters later on Guillorme’s second RBI hit of the game. Taylor added a
double in the frame, but he and Guillorme were stranded in scoring position.
Hand
surpassed 90 pitches during the 7th, so Manager Luis Rojas chose to bring
in a fresh arm to start the 8th instead of pushing for one more out
of Hand. Scarlyn Reyes worked around a pair of two out hits to keep New
Hampshire off the board in the 8th, and then Corey Taylor got a
little help from his defense while facing the minimum in the 9th.
With
another series win in the books, the Rumble Ponies were off to Portland, Maine
Sunday night, where they open a series with the Sea Dogs. Corey Oswalt (3-2,
2.54 ERA) gets the start for Binghamton in the opener, which has a 6:00 PM scheduled
start time.
