Recapish
Harol
Gonzalez hit a 5-run sized speed bump in the 3rd inning Sunday
afternoon against Lakewood, leaving the Fireflies in a hole too big to
overcome. Columbia did claw their way back into this game multiple times, but
the Blue Claws exploded for 4 more runs against Adonis Uceta, and the Fireflies
ran out of outs.
For
Harol, there were both positives and some obvious negatives in this outing. On
the negative side, he lost control a bit in the 2nd, and then that
continued into the 3rd, when Lakewood hit for the cycle against him
during a 4-batter span after he allowed a leadoff walk. On the positive side,
he got out of the 2nd inning with a strikeout when he needed it, and
then he still managed to work into the 6th inning, retiring the
final 10 Lakewood batters he faced in a row (and in short order, as you can see
in Table 1 at the bottom).
Lakewood
took advantage of an E5 to score an unearned run in the 2nd inning,
giving them a 1-0 lead. With two on and one out in the frame, Edgar Cabral hit
a grounder to Andres Gimenez for a double play opportunity, but Luke Williams
went in hard at second base, causing Michael Paez’s throw to first base to sail
high. Harol walked and hit a batter in the frame, but he also struck out Cord
Sandberg and Daniel Brito.
Darick
Hall made it 3-0 when he hit his 4th homer of the season just over
the RF wall in the 3rd. After Hall, Henri Lartigue doubled to right
center, Cord Sandberg tripled over Desmond Lindsay’s head in CF, and then Luke
Williams knocked in a run to complete the 4-batter cycle. The inning only got
worse after that, as generally reliable Ali Sanchez made a high throw to third
base trying to get a force out, which made it 6-0. The frame finally ended on a
double play started by Andres Gimenez.
The
Fireflies were quick to respond, getting two runs back in their half of the 3rd.
Desmond Lindsay beat out an infield single for the team’s first hit in 14
innings play (since the 7th inning Friday night). Ali Sanchez
followed with a flare hit, and then Columbia got them both home. After a wild
pitch advanced both runners, Gene Cone brought Lindsay home with a sac fly.
Next up was the kid, and Gimenez pulled an 0-2 pitch down the 1B line for an
RBI double.
Neither
side got anything going until the 5th, when Tim Tebow took a leadoff
walk to spark a rally. Sanchez added his second hit of the game in the frame
and Gimenez added his second RBI hit, which put two on with two out for Michael
Paez, representing the tying run. Paez hit a laser to LF, but the tall wall
held it in the park for a double, and the ball was hit so hard that Gimenez
couldn’t come around to score.
Tebow
singled in the 6th.
Adonis
Uceta took over for the 7th and Lakewood went right back into attack
mode. They greeted him with a triple-single-triple, and then Uceta issued a
walk before finally retiring a batter (Sandberg on a strikeout). Luke Williams
followed and went down swinging for the second out of the frame, but then Uceta
issued another walk and allowed a two run single to Jose Antequera.
Columbia
put together a last hoorah in the 8th. Paez got things started with
his second double of the game, and Jay Jabs knocked him in two batters later.
After the second out of the frame was recorded, Lakewood’s reliever Jonathan
Hennigan walked 4 straight, making it a 10-7 game. Will Hibbs was brought in to
replace Hennigan, and he retired the final 4 batters of the game, although
Gimenez nearly beat out an infield hit that would’ve kept things going in the 8th.
Lakewood
came into this series last in the SAL in offense, though you wouldn’t have
guessed it by the way they hit on Friday and Sunday. These two teams have one
last game left in Columbia before meeting up again next week, with Jordan
Humphreys (5-0, 1.71 ERA) scheduled to start for Columbia Monday night at 7:05
PM.
