Recapish
Merandy
Gonzalez had his streak of 28+ scoreless innings to start the season snapped
Wednesday morning, as the Shorebirds jumped on him for 3 homerun’s in a 10-3
route of the Fireflies to even this series. The Fireflies matched Delmarva’s
hit total for the night, but the 3-0 homer difference was too much for the
offense to overcome.
Merandy
was uncharacteristically wild over the first 2 innings, allowing two homers,
hitting two batters, and walking two more in the 2nd. He actually
started his night on a high note, striking out Ryan McKenna before the 1st
inning snowballed on him.
Jake Ring followed with the SAL’s
first run against Gonzalez, launched a solo blast to right center field.
Gonzalez lost control of some
breaking pitches against the next two batters, which led to the 2 HBP’s. The
next two Delmarva batters would reach on flare hits to the outfield, which made
it a 2-0 game and left the bases loaded for Gerrion Grim. Grim put this game
out of reach by launching his third homer of the season to make it 6-0.
Merandy finally ended the 1st
by striking out Jerry McClanahan and getting a line out to LF, but the damage
was done.
The
Fireflies did rally for a pair of runs in the 1st inning, which at
least kept spirits high for the home fans for a few innings. Gene Cone led off
with a single, went to 2B on a Luis Carpio single, and then they both scored on
Michael Paez’s 7th double of the year.
After
Merandy’s first walk of the 2nd inning, Ali Sanchez gunned down
Chris Clare trying to steal 2B.
Dash
Winningham stroked a double into LF in the 2nd, but he was erased on
a fielder’s choice.
The
Shorebirds went down in order against Merandy in the 3rd: Cole
Billingsley went down swinging, Preston Palmeiro hit a weak comebacker, and
then Grim went down swinging to end the frame.
Michael
Paez made it 2-2 when he singled with two outs in the 3rd inning.
As
soon as it appeared like Merandy was cruising Wednesday, he allowed a leadoff
blast to Jerry McClanahn in the 4th. He’d retire the next three in a
row to end the frame, finishing the inning with a strikeout of Ring.
Tim
Tebow lined a laser of a single into LF leading off the 4th but the
Fireflies grounded into a double play in the frame.
Gene
Cone made a nice sliding catch to end the 5th – it also marked the
end of Merandy’s outing.
Ali
Sanchez and Andres Gimenez singled in the 5th inning, but another
double play ended any threat.
Taylor
Henry took over for Gonzalez in the 6th and immediately benefitted
from some nice defense in CF.
Henry
got some more help from his defense to end the 7th, when the
teenaged middle infielder’s turned a 6-4-3 double play.
Sanchez
picked up another single in the 7th thanks to a fortunate bounce.
Joseph
Zanghi took over for the Fireflies in the 8th and struck out the
side. Unfortunately, Zanghi went back out for the 9th and allowed
two more runs to come home.
These
two play the rubber-match of this series Thursday night at 7:05 PM, with lefty
Joel Huertas (0-1, 3.86 ERA) scheduled to make his first start of the year. He was
stretched out to 5 IP in his last appearance thanks to an extra inning affair,
so he should be able to give Columbia some length out of Colin Holderman’s
rotation spot.
