Recapish

P.J. Conlon was at his Double-A best Saturday night in New Hampshire, tossing a one-hit shutout as the Rumble Ponies blew out the Fisher Cats in game two of their double-header. Since minor league double-headers only go 7 innings, this also counts as Conlon’s first complete game in the minors, although he actually lasted 10 innings during one outing for the Columbia Fireflies last year without factoring in the decision.
Conlon allowed just a leadoff single in the 3rd and a two out walk in the 7th, striking out 8 of 14 batters in between those two base runners, and retiring the other 6 in short order too. He got away with a few breakers left up, but was otherwise inducing weak contact (or no contact) all night, just like he did in the SAL last year. If he’s about to go on a run like that, then he could be pitching in the majors by the end of the year. That’s both a reflection on Conlon and the state of the Mets starting staff.
Conlon picked up just one strikeout over the first 3 innings, when he set down Emilio Guerrero swinging to end the 2nd.

David Thompson had a nice 3rd inning, leading off the top half with the games first hit, picking up his third stolen base of the year, and ending the bottom half with a nice play at third base.

Tomas Nido picked up his first of two hits in the nightcap when he singled in the 4th.

The strikeout streak for Conlon really started in the bottom of the 4th, when Raffy Lopez went down swinging for the second out of the frame. Starting with Lopez, Conlon would strikeout 8 of 10 Fisher Cats batters before issuing the 7th inning walk. He finished the 4th with a strikeout of Ryan McBroom.

The Rumble Ponies broke the game open in the 5th, scoring 4 runs on 2 hits, which was more than enough for Conlon. Jio Mier picked up the first hit, and knocked in the games first run, with an RBI single to LF. After Cats reliever Alonzo Gonzalez loaded the bases in the frame, Justin Shafer was called upon to face Kevin Kaczmarski. Kacz was sitting dead red and punished the first pitch he saw for a bases clearing triple.

Guerrero went down swinging again in the 5th.

Cody Decker made it 6-0 and the Rumble Ponies took advantage of another walk when he went deep for the third time this year in the 6th.

At this point, Conlon struck out the side in the 6th and then the first two batters of the 7th, putting an exclamation point on the start for anyone still watching (~20 people in the stadium by the time it was over).

The Rumble Ponies also used the 7th to put an exclamation on their offensive outburst. Patrick Biondi singled, Tomas Nido ripped a double into the left center gap, and then both came home on a Kevin Taylor single to make it 8-0. David Thompson added a sac fly to make it a final score of 9-0.

After splitting the double-header behind one great start apiece, these two teams wrap up their series Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM.
