Recapish

The Akron Rubber Ducks were up 1-0 after just 1 batter Tuesday night, but the Binghamton Rumble Ponies answered with 3 homers of their own en route to a 5-4 come back win. The power explosion for Binghamton comes after the team finished April last in the Eastern League with just 9 homers, so hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.
Rumble Ponies starter Donovan Hand recovered nicely after allowing the leadoff homer and two runs total in the 1st, but left two runners on base before exiting in the 6th, and Corey Taylor allowed both inherited runners to score. Hand struck out 3 in the 1st and later struck out the side in order during the 4th inning for 6 of his 7 strikeouts. He had retired 10 of 11 before entering the 6th, but he reached his pitch limit before he could get the third out of the inning.
Binghamton had begun their comeback right away in the bottom of the 1st. Champ Stuart worked a leadoff walk, went to 3B on Luis Guillorme’s hit, and then scored on a double play groundout. Matt Oberste also singled in the frame, but was left at 1B.

Tomas Nido tied the game when he launched a two out solo homer to CF in the 3rd inning.

Next it was David Thompson’s turn to go deep, after Kevin Kaczmarski led off the frame with a single.

Stuart reached base for the second time when he singled leading off the 5th – it was his sixth straight game out of the leadoff spot reaching base multiple times – but he was caught trying to steal a base for the first time in 2017.

After Taylor took over and allowed the tying runs to score, Oberste led off the 6th and wasted no time giving Binghamton the lead back by going deep for the second time this season.

Corey Taylor had to work around a throwing error from Oberste in the 7th, but he stranded the tying run at 3B in the frame to hold the lead - Luis Guillorme helped with a fancy no-look toss to Mier for the second out. The Rumble Ponies then turned to their relief aces Tim Peterson and Alberto Baldonado for the 8th and 9th innings, respectively. Those two did not disappoint, as each pitcher struck out the side in their frame to close out the game.

This series wraps up Wednesday at 12:05 PM, with Corey Oswalt (2-2, 3.13 ERA) scheduled to start for the Rumble Ponies. The Ponies are looking to sweep the rain-shortened set and win their 4th straight overall.
