Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s travelled east after their homestand ended Thursday night, ending
up in New Orleans for a four-game series with the newly named Baby Cakes. The
game started as a pitcher’s duel between Ricky Knapp and Kelvin Marte, and New
Orleans had the edge early. But Marte’s limited pitch count for the game
knocked him out after just 5 innings, opening the door for a Las Vegas comeback
against the Babies bullpen.
One
day shy of his 25th birthday, Ricky Knapp had his most effective
outing since 5/3, allowing just the one run and six baserunner’s over his six
innings of work. The only extra base hit he allowed came back to burn him when
pinch-hitter Chad Hinshaw connected for a two out RBI single in the 5th,
giving the Baby Cakes their only run of the game.
Las
Vegas loaded the bases with one out in the 1st inning but couldn’t
get a run home in the frame. Amed Rosario’s single was the only hit of the
frame, and would be his only hit of the game, snapping a streak of six
multi-hit games in a row.
Gavin
Cecchini led off the 3rd inning with a single, but the 51s sent the
minimum to the plate in the frame because Rosario was picked off at first base.
The
51s scored their runs in the 7th, jumping ahead when Josh Rodriguez
launched a two run homer to left center field. The homer came right after
Travis Taijeron lined his 12th double of the season into left field.
Phillip Evans added a 9th inning single to put two runners on, but
Las Vegas couldn’t add any insurance runs.
Having just been handed a 2-1 lead, the
Las Vegas 51s went into shutdown mode when they took over in the 7th.
Erik Goeddel, Ben Rowen, and Chase Bradford each provided a perfect inning of
relief, and they collective needed just 27 pitches to finish off a much-needed
51s win.
Up
against one of the worst teams in the PCL (by record), the 51s are looking to
take a big step back towards .500 this series, but they’ll need more offensive
production moving forward if they want that to happen. They turn to Sean
Gilmartin (0-1, 6.94 ERA) for Saturday night’s start, which is scheduled for
7:00 PM. As an aside, I’d much prefer Saturday afternoon games anyway, but it’s
especially frustrating when all the Mets minors’ teams and the New York Mets
are playing at 7:00 PM on a Saturday.
