Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies overcame early struggles from starter P.J. Conlon to
take the rubber match of their series with New Hampshire. Conlon was knocked
out of the game in the 4th, but the Ponies pen was much more
successful against the Fisher Cats Sunday (1 ER allowed over 7.2 IP), which
allowed the offense to chip away at the lead, force extras, and walk off with a
win.
Conlon
found himself down 2-0 before recording an out Sunday, and then facing a bases
loaded, one out situation before the 1st ended. He turned up the
switch to strike out the next two batters and escape that jam, but then quickly
created another jam for himself in the 2nd. After walking the
leadoff hitter, he allowed a one out single to Reese McGuire. Conlon nearly
escaped the 2nd with nothing allowed, but Ryan McBroom had other
ideas, launching his second blast of the season to give New Hampshire a 5-1
lead.
After
the 1st inning, Binghamton was quick to get a run back, and the game
never seemed out of hand. After the Cats extended their lead with another
crooked number in the 2nd inning, the game seemed a little more out
of reach, especially with a flamethrower hitting 97/98 MPH for the other team.
But the Bingo bats were not intimidated. Champ Stuart stayed ridiculously hot
from the leadoff spot. Luis Guillorme was on base 5 times and saw 28 pitches
across his 6 PA. Matt Oberste had a timely hit and David Thompson broke out of
his slump with a multi-hit game. Overall, the Ponies worked 3 walks against
Fisher Cats starter Conner Greene, and knocked him out in the 6th
after making it a 6-5 game.
The
Fisher Cats had plenty of chances to tack on, getting a runner in scoring
position during the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th,
and 10th, but failing to score in all 5 frames. After 2 very strong
innings from Alberto Baldonado, Tim Peterson mowed them down in the 11th,
which earned him the win. The offense gets all the credit during a walkoff, but
often the bullpen deserves the most work, and that was definitely the case for
Binghamton on Sunday.
With
the series win, Binghamton improved to 11-9 on the season, and now they’ll
welcome Akron into town for a 3-game series after taking 2/3 in Akron last
week. Donovan Hand is scheduled to start in the opener for Binghamton opposite
Michael Peoples in a rematch from last week. The Ponies ended up with a 4-3 win
in their matchup last week, though neither starter factor in the decision.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Champ
Stuart didn’t waste time extending his hit streak to 5 games, leading off the 1st
with a double into the LF corner. He came around to score Bingo’s first run on
a Tomas Nido groundout two batters later, making it a 2-1 game.
Matt
Oberste provided the next big Rumble for the Ponies, knocking a two run triple
into LF with the help of a fortunate deflection: Dale Burdick (walk) and Luis
Guillorme (single) came around to score on the play.
Cody
Decker took a walk leading off the Bingo 4th, went to 3B on David
Thompson’s deflected single, and then scored on a groundout to make it 5-4.
Guillorme
added his second hit of the game leading off the 5th, but was
quickly erased on a double play.
Thompson
reached on an error to keep the 6th inning alive, and then pushed
the envelope to help Binghamton tack on another run. With Biondi at the plate
and two outs, Thompson stole 2B (his second steal of the year) and came around
to score on Biondi’s RBI single into CF.
With
one out in the 9th, Champ Stuart came to the plate and showed off
his power, tying the game with one swing. Guillorme followed with his third hit
of the game, but was again erased on a double play.
Although
he came into this game on a cold streak, David Thompson proved to be a huge
contributor in the Ponies offense Sunday. He led off the 11th inning
with his second double of the year, which set up the walkoff win for
Binghamton. Luis Guillorme would come up with the bases loaded later in the
frame and came through with his 4th hit of the game to end it.
