Recapish
Steven
Matz’s return to the Las Vegas 51s did not go well Tuesday night, as the Round
Rock Express smacked him around for five runs over four innings during his
second rehab start of 2017. The Express kept on smacking the ball after Matz
left, piling on until they had a 14-1 lead and catcher Jeff Glenn was sent out
to pitch for Las Vegas. But the results of this game were the secondary story
of the night, with Matz’s rehab taking the billing as number one.
We call it a rehab start because
the major league season is in progress and Matz is making these starts while on
the disabled list, but realistically, this is more like Spring Training for
Matz, and everyone else is two months ahead of him. The Mets were hoping they
could maybe push Matz into the major league rotation after this start, but even
if the results were good, I don’t think Matz would’ve been ready for that based
on how he pitched.
The radar gun wasn’t displaying
pitch speeds for every Matz pitch, but 51s radio announcer Russ Langer was
mostly calling him 88-91 throughout the night, with a top speed of 93 MPH. There
is no official PITCHF/x in the minors (most stadiums do have trackman, but that
data is not public), but he appeared to throw mostly fastballs and curveballs,
with some changeups tossed into the mix. His command wasn’t great, but I
thought the ump’s strike zone was bad and inconsistent. That said, as you can
see below, the camera angle is way off center, which can skew one’s view. Also,
his command wasn’t great within the strike zone either, which led to four extra
base hits for the Express.
Enough
talk, let’s recap.
Amed Rosario picked up the first
hit of the game when he singled with two outs in the 1st, and then
picked up his ninth stolen base of the year with a swipe of second.
Steven
Matz issued a walk in the 1st inning, but he picked that runner off
and faced the minimum in the frame.
Brett
Nicholas led off the Express 2nd with a single, stole second base,
and then scored on Cesar Puello’s first homer of the game. In between that,
Matz struck out Drew Stubbs for his first strikeout of the night and induced a
groundout to first. Matz finished the frame with a strikeout, but was already
at 39 pitches after two innings of work.
The
Express completed the cycles with a triple and then later a double in the 3rd
inning. Matz walked Jason Martinson for the second time in the frame, and
Martinson came home on a groundout for the fifth run of the game. Matz finished
the frame with another strikeout of Stubbs, but needed an additional 24 pitches
in the frame, putting him up to 63 for the game.
Matz
made it two straight strikeouts when he caught Ronald Guzman looking to start
the 4th, but then Cesar Puello came up again. I was always high on
Puello when he was a Mets prospect, so I was looking forward to watching him
this series, but I didn’t want to see him go 2-2 with two homers against Matz. His
second homer went out to RF, and was the last mark against Matz, as he left
after finishing the 4th.
Kevin
McGowan took over for Matz in the 5th and the Round Rock Express
unloaded a season’s worth of frustration on him. The Express started the night
13th out of 16 teams in OPS and 13th in homers, but
finished with five homers among the nine extra base hits they collected (they
went 18-40 with four walks as a team). As unlikely as it seems, they hit two of
those homers on the first two pitches from McGowan, who would retire just two
of ten batters faced. David Roseboom came into this game for one batter and
stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to end the frame.
Tyler
Wagner took over for rehabbing Tyson Ross to star the 6th, and
Victor Cruzado took him deep for his first ever Triple-A homerun.
Erik
Goeddel took over for the 6th and allowed three straight singles for
another Round Rock run. He finished the frame with strikeouts of Puello and
Wilson.
Amed
Rosario and Dominic Smith led off the 7th with back-to-back singles,
and then Travis Taijeron took a HBP to load the bases with zero outs. It
wouldn’t have made a difference on the outcome of this game, but Las Vegas
couldn’t get even one run home in the frame.
Round
Rock capped their scoring when Martinson went deep for the second time in the 7th,
which saw Chase Bradford on the mound for Las Vegas. With the game hopeless at
14-1, backup catcher Jeff Glenn (who was mostly a bullpen catcher/base coach
for Las Vegas in 2016) came in for the 8th and faced the minimum on eleven
pitches. The 51s turned a double play behind him after he walked Puello.
Amed
Rosario reached on an error to start the 9th inning and came home
two batters later when Travis Taijeron went deep for his eighth homer of the
year. It was Rosario’s eighth multi-hit game in his last ten starts, and his 24th
multi-hit game in 44 games for Las Vegas this year. At this point, it sure seems
like it’s more about the super-two than whether he is ready. Of course, no
guarantee Terry Collins would use him everyday in the majors anyway. (Taijeron's single is included in the series of GIF's below).
The
51s turn to Ricky Knapp (2-4, 5.44 ERA) to stop their two-game skid and even
this series Wednesday night at 8:05 PM. They are expected face a familiar name
in Dillon Gee (2-4, 4.40 ERA), who is coming off his best start of the year.
