Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s came out on the short end of a pitcher’s duel between their
former backend starter in Dillon Gee (although Gee was definitely one of the
better starters on the Mets staff at times) and a potential future backend
starter in Ricky Knapp. Gee finished with nine strikeouts and turned in his
second straight scoreless performance for Round Rock, and I couldn’t help but
think he’d be really helpful if he were in the Mets system right now – let’s
face it, he’d probably be starting Saturday if he were in the system.
The
Express struck first in this game, getting to Knapp for three runs between the
2nd and 3rd innings, which was all Gee would need. Knapp
turned in a strong effort, walking nobody and limited hard contact allowed
outside of the 2nd/3rd innings, but the 51s defense let
him down, and the bats just couldn’t provide him with any run support in this
game. His curveball was especially sharp at times though, which helped him pick
up four strikeouts and last 7 innings.
Knapp
picked up a strikeout of Jason Martinson while working a perfect 1st.
He started the 2nd with
back-to-back strikeouts of Ronald Guzman and Cesar Puello, but then allowed a
run on back-to-back hits from Travis Snider (single) and Preston Beck (triple).
The
first two Round Rock batters reached in the 3rd, but it took a
fielding error committed with two outs to get those runs home, which is why
they are unearned. Given the final score, that error from Phillip Evans proved
to be the difference in this one.
Las
Vegas had a big opportunity to jump right back into this game in the 4th.
Brandon Nimmo worked a leadoff walk and then went to third on Dominic Smith’s
13th double of the year, but Gee buckled down to strikeout Travis
Taijeron and Desmond Jennings back-to-back to escape the jam.
Knapp
really settled in after the third, facing one over the minimum during the final
four frames, which left the door open for a Las Vegas comeback. Knapp struck
out Jason Martinson in the 5th, and then the 51s turned a very nice
double play behind him to erase a base runner.
The
51s wouldn’t get another base runner until the 8th, when the finally
broke through for a run. Xorge Carrillo reached on a one out single to CF, went
to second on a Gavin Cecchini single, to third on a groundout, and then scored
on Amed Rosario’s hit of the game.
Albert Baldonado took over for Knapp in the 8th and worked around some trouble to keep it a 3-1 game. He struck out Travis Snider with the bases loaded for a key second out in the frame, allowing him to finish strong after a shaky start to the inning.
The
51s had no comeback in them for the 9th, so instead they fall behind
2-0 in the series. Las Vegas will look to avoid falling a season high 10-games
below the break even mark when these two go at it again Thursday night. Sean
Gilmartin (1-1, 5.94 ERA) is scheduled to make the 8:05 PM start for Las Vegas opposite
Anthony Bass (0-0, 3.00 ERA).
