Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies came out on the short side of a back-and-forth affair
with Altoona Wednesday night, as the Curve evened the series up with an 8-6
win. Rumble Ponies starter Mickey Jannis turned in a quality start, and was
very sharp outside of the 4th, but the generally reliable Ponies pen
allowed five runs over the final three innings. After a roster jam in Las
Vegas, L.J. Mazzilli was added to the roster earlier in the day, and made it in
time to provide a homer off the bench.
Jannis
had to work around a pair of singles over the first two innings, but his
defense helped him turn five grounders into five outs, plus he struck out
red-hot Kevin Kramer.
The
Rumble Ponies struck first after Austin Coley got wild in the 2nd. Cody
Decker and Kevin Kaczmarski were hit by pitches, and then David Thompson took a
walk to load the bases. After a Jio Mier sac fly made it 1-0, Colton Plaia
worked a walk to reload the bases. Mickey Jannis and Champ Stuart followed with
RBI singles to make it 3-0 after 2.
Kevin
Kaczmarski singled in the 3rd, advancing Decker (walk) to second
base, but a Mier double play cut any potential rally short.
Jannis
was smacked around in the 4th. Kevin Newman led off the frame with a
single grounded sharply through the middle, but was thrown out trying to
stretch it to a double. Kramer followed with his 13th double of the
year before stealing third base. The steal proved unnecessary, as the next
three batters went single, triple, double, and then Jannis issued his only walk
of the game. With the game spiraling, Jannis tossed a grounder hit Guillorme’s
way, and he connected with Mier to start an unusual inning ending double play.
Jannis
still had to work around trouble in the 5th and 6th
innings, but he’d end his night on a high note, striking out Wyatt Mathisen
with a runner on third base.
Cory
Burns was the first to replace Jannis and things did not go well for him, as
Altoona knocked him out after just four batters (two singles, two walks). Kyle
Regnault was brought on next, in a bases loaded situation, and he’d allow two
of the inherited runners to score. Binghamton benefitted from a fortunate infield fly rule called on a pop out hit to shallow CF, which dropped in - a run would score on the play. The inning ended with the third double play
turned by Bingo’s middle infield of the game, although it was the first from
the Guillorme-Mazzilli pair.
The
Ponies wasted little time getting those runs back in their half of the 7th,
which Plaia got started with a single to CF. Mazzilli followed with his homer,
which made it a 6-5 game. Guillorme worked a walk two batters later and then advanced
to third base on an errant pickoff attempt. This opened the door for Kevin
Taylor to tie the game with an RBI single into RF.
David
Thompson singled leading off the 8th, and another errant pickoff throw
had him 90 feet away in a tie game, but Plaia and Mazzilli went down swinging
before a Champ Stuart fly out to RF.
Tim
Peterson started the 9th with a 0.00 ERA in 13.2 IP between Las
Vegas and Binghamton this year, but Jordan Luplow ended that streak two batters
later, giving the Curve their decisive 8-6 lead with a homer crushed to LF.
This
series and the Binghamton home stand wrap up Thursday morning at 10:35 AM, with
P.J. Conlon (3-2, 2.88 ERA) scheduled to make the start for Binghamton.
