Recapish
The
St. Lucie Mets finally overcame their struggles against the Marauders to snap a
two-game losing streak behind a dominant Joe Shaw Wednesday night. Shaw turned
in his best performance in the FSL to date and became just the second St. Lucie
starter to finish the 7th inning this year. The Mets 4-5 hitters
provided the pop to back their hitter up, as Patrick Mazeika and Jhoan Urena
combed for three extra base hits and all six runs batted in.
The
Mets wasted little time jumping ahead in this game, relying on arguably their
two hottest hitters to take a 1-0 lead before Shaw took the mound. Anthony
Dimino, who was making his first start at 2B (tested plenty, no problems), hit
a one out single into RF and then came around to score on Mazeika’s 8th
double of the season. These two would be a nuisance for Bradenton all day,
reaching base four times apiece.
Jeff
Diehl finished with 2 singles Wednesday night, his first coming in the 2nd,
but never made it past 1B.
Shaw
didn’t strike anyone out over the first two innings, but 5 of the 6 outs came
on the ground, including this nice play started by Nick Sergakis at 3B to end
the 2nd.
John
Mora started the 3rd inning with his 5th double of the
year and then came around to score on Mazeika’s 4th homer of the
season.
Speedy
Cole Tucker hit a one out double against Shaw in the 3rd inning, but
a great defensive play from J.C. Rodriguez and Shaw’s first strikeout ended any
threat.
Sergakis
and Diehl singled in the 4th, but the inning was cut short because
the third GIF below is somehow a double play. The ball drops, Sergakis is safe
getting back to 2B, and Enmanuel Zabala is safe at 1B, so there should only be
one out on the play (unless base runner interference).
Shaw
struck out Logan Hill while working around a leadoff walk in the 4th
inning to keep Bradenton off the board.
Dimino
picked up another single in the 5th inning, but he was caught
stealing for the first time in 7 attempts (this was his 15th game
with St. Lucie).
The Marauders leadoff batter again
reached in the 5th, and again Shaw worked around the threat to keep
it a 3-0 game, though not without some help. He struck out Tucker along the way
and then J.C. Rodriguez made another great play, saving a run in the process –
give a hat tip to Urena for holding the bag.
Urena
singled to make it two on with nobody out in the 6th, but a double
play ended cut short any chance of a rally. J.C. Rodriguez nearly beat out a
two out single with Mazeika coming down the line from 3B, but the bang-bang
play went to the home team.
Shaw
made it six straight set down after retiring the side in order during the 6th,
adding a strikeout of Will Craig along the way.
A
strikeout of Casey Hughston made it 8 straight for Shaw, but Kevin Krause would
make him work through one extra batter before he got his 7 innings. He hit 94 for the K and touched 96 during his final frame.
The
Mets put together a key rally in the top of the 8th inning, which
was sparked by an Anthony Dimino walk. Mazeika singled to load the bases two batters
later, and then Urena promptly unloaded them with a double to CF.
Joshua
Torres took over for Shaw in the 8th but could not match his
dominance of the Bradenton lineup.
Torres
allowed a pair of runs in the 8th and another in the 9th before
Tyler Bashlor took over and finished things off for him.
Zabala
added one more single to the Mets hit tally in the top of the 9th,
but he was stranded at 3B in the frame.
The
Mets will look for a split of this series Thursday night at 6:30 PM, though a St.
Lucie starter for the game hadn’t been announced as of this posting.
