Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies completed a four-game sweep of the Richmond Flying
Squirrels behind another strong effort for Corey Oswalt, who has been very
effective for Binghamton since early April. Oswalt had to leave after a pair of
errors opened the door for a big Richmond scoring threat in the 7th,
but Binghamton’s Corey Taylor came in to slam the door shut on that threat, and
the Bingo pen faced the minimum over the final two innings. Matt Oberste and
Luis Guillorme had the biggest nights at the plate for the Ponies, but Tomas
Nido also stayed hot with a ~395 foot RBI double to CF. Just like yesterday,
the feed was choppy most of the game.
Oswalt
found himself in trouble almost as soon as he entered the game, as the first
two batters reached on singles to put runners on the corners. Oswalt escaped
with just one run allowed on a sac fly, striking out Slade Heathcott along the
way.
The
Ponies wasted little time getting that run back in the next frame, although they
did waste two outs before they got things starts. L.J. Mazzilli worked a walk
to keep the inning going, stole second base and then came home on Matt
Oberste’s first RBI hit of the game.
C.J.
Hinojosa led off the Richmond 2nd with a single, but he was picked
off by Oswalt in the frame.
Oberste
came through with another two out RBI hit in the 4th, bringing home
Kevin Kaczmarski after he kept the inning alive with a two out single.
Heathcott
got revenge against Oswalt when he took him deep leading off the 4th,
which tied the game at two. The Flying Squirrels put together another threat in
the frame thanks to a pair of singles, but Oswalt escaped the jam with a
strikeout of Tyler Horan and a pickoff from Tomas Nido. Hinojosa was caught too
far from second base, but took off when Nido threw to second base, so Luis
Guillorme had to cut the throw off and throw to third – it wasn’t shown well.
Binghamton
responded with back-to-back two run innings. Patrick Biondi worked a walk with
one out in the 5th, then stole second and third base on consecutive
pitches to Luis Guillorme. Guillorme knocked him in for the go-ahead run and
then came home on the aforementioned Tomas Nido double.
Oswalt
worked around a double in the 5th, striking out Brandon Bednar to
end the frame. Kevin Kaczmarski fell down while chasing a pop up to shallow
right, but he was able to keep his eye on the ball and make an impressive
catch.
After
Mazzilli walked for the third straight time leading off the Bingo 6th,
Oberste followed with his third RBI hit of the game, this time connecting for his
sixth double of the season. Oberste came home later in the frame on Guillorme’s
second RBI hit of the game.
Oswalt
won the last battle in his matchup with Slade Heathcott, striking him out for a
second time to start the 6th. Oswalt also struck out Dylan Davis in
the frame, and then struck out Horan to start the 7th, making that
four of five batters to go down on strikes against Oswalt between the 5th
and 7th innings (always good to see that kind of success later in
the start).
With
just 76 pitches thrown entering the 7th, Oswalt had a chance to work
into the 8th, but Manager Luis Rojas chose to bring in a fresh arm
after two errors were committed in a three-batter span, with the middle batter
doubling off of Oswalt. Corey Taylor took over and he retired all four batters
he faced, striking out Bednar in the 8th.
Given
the save situation, Rojas turned to closer Tim Peterson for the 9th,
and Peterson faced the minimum in the frame, though not without some help from
his defense for the final out. Eliezer Zambrano tripled off the RF wall with
two outs in the 9th and the ball bounced far away from Kaczmarski,
forcing Patrick Biondi to come over, field the ball and get it in. Fortunately,
Biondi did that just in time and sent a strong throw towards home, with
Peterson provided the relay throw to catch Zambrano trying to score on the play
(feed didn’t show that part, sorry).
Despite
their shiny 26-15 record, the Rumble Ponies find themselves one game behind
EL-best Trenton Thunder in the Eastern division (Trenton is on a four game win
streak and sit at 29-16). They come home Friday for a weekend series with fifth
place Hartford. Casey Delgado (3-4, 5.71 ERA) gets the ball in the opener,
which is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
