Recapish

Merandy Gonzalez continued his great start to the season for the Fireflies Thursday night in Lexington, matching a season high with seven strikeouts over six strong innings – he’s now gone 6+ in six of eight starts this year and 7+ in four. The Fireflies jumped on Lexington starter Ofreidy Gomez for three runs in the 1st inning and then Merandy and the Fireflies bullpen made that stand up for the rest of the game.
The Fireflies 1st inning rally started after the first two batters of the game went down on strikes. Michael Paez worked a walk to keep the inning alive and then came around to score on Dash Winningham’s seventh double of the season. After the next two batters walked to load the bases, Jay Jabs connected for the biggest hit of the game, driving home two more with a double to make it a 3-0 lead.

Merandy Gonzalez came out firing strikes and struck out the first batter on four pitches. Legends hitting coach Jesus Azuaje took exception to the ump’s call on the check swing for strike three, and he ended up getting himself ejected before the next AB started. Merandy worked around a two out walk issued in the frame.

Merandy’s quickest frame came in the 2nd, when he needed just nine pitches for a pair of strikeouts and an inning ending grounder to Luis Carpio.

Carpio then mashed a double with two outs in the Fireflies half of the 3rd, but he was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple.

The Legends picked up their first hit against Merandy in the 3rd, but he was out of the frame after a pair of groundouts.

Lexington finally broke through against Merandy in the 4th, scoring a pair of runs on three his and a walk. Meibrys Viloria provided a big RBI double to left in the frame, and came home later on a Joe Dudek single. The inning ended on a liner off the bat of Manny Olloque that turned into a 3-6 double play.

Gene Cone singled and stole second base in the 5th – he has above average speed but that was just his fourth stolen base of the year.

Ali Sanchez made a nice play on a bunt attempt from Nick Heath in the 5th, but then Heath went down in obvious pain. He had to be helped off the field by two teammates, so I hope it was nothing serious. Merandy ended the frame with a strikeout of Khalil Lee.

Merandy allowed a pair of singles in the 6th, but struck out the side in the frame and stranded two runners in scoring position.

Jabs picked up his second hit of the game leading off the 7th, but it would be the final Fireflies hit of the game.

With Merandy near 100 pitches, Manager Jose Leger went to Adonis Uceta for the 7th and he struck out three over two scoreless frames.

Dash Winningham worked a leadoff walk in the top half of the 9th and went to second on a balk, but the Fireflies couldn’t get him home for an insurance run. With the game tight at 3-2, Leger went to his best reliever so far in 2017 for the save. Max Kuhns has been a strikeout machine out of the Fireflies pen, and he added another to his tally while working a perfect final frame. Kuhns is up to 28 K: 6 BB with just eleven hits allowed in 20.2 IP.

After a solid all around effort in game one of this series, the Fireflies look to keep the good feels rolling behind Blake Taylor (0-5, 4.03 ERA) Friday night at 7:05 PM. Taylor may be winless this year, but he’s allowed two earned runs or less with six innings pitched in four of his seven starts this year.
