Recap:
With
Jacob ∂eGrom on his way up to the Mets to likely help their bullpen, the Las
Vegas 51s turned Joel Carreno for a spot start, his first start since July 20,
2012. Despite a rough first couple of innings, Carreno gave the 51s more than
what they could have expected from a roughly 70-pitch count limit, leaving the
game with two outs in the 6th and winning 5-3. The 51s offense
erupted for five runs off Rainiers starter Erasmo Ramirez in the bottom of the
2nd, as M∂D and Dykstra each went yard. The Rainiers would make
things close with runs in the 6th and 7th innings, but
three more runs in the 8th put this game out of reach, and manager
Wally Backman sat his closer Vic Black in favor of Zack Thornton for the 9th.
In
addition to the 51s receiving their first start of the season from Joel
Carreno, recently demoted Omar Quintanilla and Josh Satin made their debut,
playing the middle infield and hitting 1-2 in the batter order. They also were
important factors in the decision, combining to go 4-8 with 3 R, 3 RBI, a walk
and a sac bunt. Additionally, Cesar Puello had a very solid night, essentially
stealing the 51s run in the 6th, with a little help from Nick
Franklin. After reaching on a Nick Franklin error (routine play, he bobbled it
then threw it away), Puello would advance to 2B on the aforementioned sac bunt
from Q. After Satin struck out, Dykstra hit another routine groundball at
Franklin that was bobbled for his second error of the inning. Franklin did not
attempt to throw the ball to 1B after recovering, and the Rainiers kind of fell
asleep on the play for a moment, putting their heads down. This afforded Puello
an opportunity to break for home unexpectedly, and he dove headfirst across the
plate as the high throw arrived - I’ve said this before, Cesar Puello is very
fast.
The
Rainiers were there own worst enemy on the night, as they lacked in overall
opportunities and combined to commit four defensive errors. Nick Franklin had a
particularly rough night, committing two of those errors in the bottom of the 6th
inning, after committing a base running error in the top of the 6th,
when he was thrown out trying to tag and go from 1B to 2B – if you’re going to
go for that, you better make it. Chris Taylor had another nice night against
the 51s, although he did commit his 5th error of the season. Of the
two, Taylor would fit the Mets need for a capable SS who could provide some
offense, whereas Nick Franklin does not appear to be a solution for any of the
Mets problems.
Miguel Socolovich and Zack Thornton
pitched very nicely out of the 51s pen to finish the game, retiring the last 5
Rainier hitters of the night. The win moves the 51s to 27-11, best record in
AAA, including 16-7 overall at home. It also puts them ahead two games to one in
the series, with the final game scheduled for Tuesday at 1:35 PM ET (morning in
Las Vegas). Logan Verrett is scheduled to pitch for the 51s, while the Rainiers
have yet to announce their starter.
