Recapish
After
their scheduled starter was promoted to the majors Friday night, the Las Vegas
51s had to rely on their bullpen for all nine innings, and they did really
well… after the 2nd inning. Fresh off the DL and having not pitched
in 9 days, the 51s hoped Beck Wheeler could give them some depth, but he had
some control problems in the 1st, and things got worse in the 2nd.
Kevin McGowan tried to clean things up for him, but that 2nd inning
was determined to end poorly for Las Vegas, and that was essentially the game.
Round Rock held a 7-1 lead after the 2nd, and while the 51s pen
combined for 6 scoreless frames to close the game, the 51s single-heavy attack on
offense produced little results.
Before
this game was over early, there was reason for excitement from Mets fans.
Dominic Smith connected for his sixth homer of the year with two outs in the 1st
inning – he was the only 51s batter to put the ball in play in the 1st.
Wheeler
only allowed a walk in the 1st, but two wild pitches and a groundout
later the game was tied. He issued three walks and allowed a pair of doubles
before McGowan took over for him in the 2nd. McGowan came into a
bases loaded situation and couldn’t strand any of the runners, though he did
strand additional runners on the corners in the frame.
McGowan
allowed a double and two walks to load up the bases for Round Rock again in the
4th, but this time he struck out Preston Beck and Jason Martinson
while stranding everyone.
Victor
Cruzado had a nice series in Round Rock, finishing with a multi-hit game after
a homer and double earlier in the week. His first hit of this game came in the
4th, but the Ponies stranded two in that frame. Also shown below is
Phillip Evans leadoff single from the 5th, and Dominic Smith’s
second hit of the game from the 6th.
Alberto
Baldonado took over in the 4th and worked a pair of scoreless
frames. Gavin Cecchini started a double play behind him to help him end both
innings, and he struck out Travis Snider to start the 5th. The 51s
made it four straight innings with a double play turned when they turned double
plays behind Erik Goeddel in the 6th and Chase Bradford in the 7th.
The 51s put together one last hurrah in
the 8th, with a two run rally sparked by Amed Rosario’s infield
single. Smith followed with a walk to reach base for the third time Friday
night, and then a fielding error loaded the bases. Cruzado connected for a two
run single two batters later, which made it 7-3, but that’s all Las Vegas could
get out of the frame, as they left the bases stranded.
Hansel
Robles made his season debut for Las Vegas with a scoreless 8th. He
allowed a double to Snider before striking out Drew Stubbs and Beck
back-to-back.
With
this disastrous road trip behind the, Las Vegas returns home to host the El
Paso Chihuahua’s this weekend. The series starts Saturday night at 10:05 PM,
with Wilfredo Boscan (0-2, 3.45 ERA) scheduled to start for the 51s.
