Recapish

After a rainout cancelled their game Tuesday night, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Richmond Flying Squirrels played two Wednesday, and the Ponies rode a top-notch start from P.J. Conlon to a game one victory. Conlon allowed four base runners over the first two innings – the final one on an error from rehabbing shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera – but then retired the final 16 batters of the game consecutively.
Unfortunately, the feed for this game was very choppy, so the highlights for this game are limited. I thought it was just my connection, but it must’ve been the connection at The Diamond (Richmond’s stadium), because the archive is very choppy too.
Conlon was the second Mets minors’ starter to throw a 7-inning complete game shutout Wednesday, but his start couldn’t have been more different than Jordan Humphreys. Humphreys struck out ten and was missing bats all game, whereas Conlon finished with just three strikeouts and relied on weak contact and his defense all game. The Richmond announcers were impressed with his offspeed stuff, which kept the Richmond batters off balance all night. He never needed more than 16 pitches in any one inning.
Binghamton didn’t pick up a hit until the 4th, when they connected for a run on three straight hits. Tomas Nido sparked the games only rally with a double to center field, his eighth of the year. Nido advanced to third on a Kevin Taylor single and then scored on a Kevin Kaczmarski single.

The Rumble Ponies added a few more singles after that, including one from Conlon and one from Asdrubal Cabrera, but couldn’t add any insurance. Of course, that didn’t matter since Conlon wasn’t letting anyone on base anyway.

With a 1-0 win in the books, Binghamton turned to Donovan Hand for the double-header sweep chance in game two, with a chance to clinch the four-game series win as well.
