Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies kept the good feels rolling with a sixth straight win
to start the home stand. Casey Delgado struggled with command early in this start,
but he limited the damage enough in each of the first three innings, and his
teammates picked him up at the plate. After the Yard Goats tied the game in the
top half of the 3rd, Kevin Kaczmarski went out and hit a homer to
get the lead back in the bottom half, and the Rumble Ponies pitching did the
rest. With all the minors games going at the same time as the Mets game, I miss things some times, but this strikeout from Cory Burns was so weird that it made it to deadspin.
Delgado
came out of the gates a little wild, allowing a pair of doubles that sandwiched
a walk for two Hartford runs. He’s done this before only to settle down and
improve as the game went on, which was the case in this outing. He ended the
frame with a strikeout of Josh Fuentes to strand a runner at third.
The
Rumble Ponies then got those two runs back and two more in their half of the 1st,
although most didn’t do much more than stand at the plate with their bats on
their shoulders. Only Luis Guillorme and Kevin Kaczmraski singled in the frame,
but there were five walks, all from Hartford starter Luis Nieblas before he
exited. He threw 41 pitches in this game, and just 17 went for strikes.
Omar
Carrizales made it a 4-3 game when he connected for a two out single in the 2nd,
but he was then picked off of first base to end the frame.
The
Yard Goats got another two out RBI hit against Delgado in the 3rd,
with Fuentes coming through this time, getting a little revenge against Delgado
and tying the game.
As
mentioned, that tie did not last long, because Kaczmraski went deep in the Bingo
half of the 3rd.
After
all that early offense, neither side would get another runner into scoring
position until the bottom of the 8th. Kaczmarski connected for his
third hit of the game with one out in the frame, went to second on a hit by
pitch, and to third on a fly out, but the Rumble Ponies left the bases loaded.
That
missed opportunity nearly proved huge in the 9th, as Correlle Prime
reached on a one out triple, putting the tying run just 90 feet away. Of
course, Bingo closer Tim Peterson had allowed more than one hit just once this
year, and Hartford was unable to make it twice.
Despite
the long winning streak, Binghamton is still one game behind the Trenton
Thunder for the best record in the EL, as Trenton keeps winning as well. The
Rumble Ponies turn to Blake Beavan (0-0, 6.00 ERA) to push the streak to seven
games Saturday night, with game time scheduled for 7:05 PM.
