Recap

The 51s futility on offense continued Monday night, as their scoreless streak reached 22 innings before a double down the RF line gave them their only run of the game in the 8th. Over the first 5 innings, Tyler Pill was throwing a strong game, with only one bad pitch responsible for putting him behind 2-0 – he grooved one to lefty Joey Wendle in the 3rd. He’d allow 3 runs over the next two frames, one of which came on a solo blast from Matt Carson leading off the 7th, putting the 51s in a 5-0 hole. With the way the 51s offense has been struggling lately, it 5 runs seemed as insurmountable as 25. Cody Satterwhite came in for a perfect 8th, making his short appearance Saturday night look more like a blip than a return to his struggling ways – he had thrown 8 scoreless innings over his 5 previous appearances, with 12 K: 1 BB and 4 singles allowed during that time.
Check out more from this game below. Las Vegas heads to Memphis Tuesday night, with Matt Bowman scheduled to start in the opener at 8:05 PM. The 51s are riding a 6-game losing streak into this series, and it’s not clear when help is going to trickle up from below.

Scoring Highlights

Jayce Boyd picked up the 51s first hit of the game with 2 outs in the 2nd.

Cory Vaughn and Wilfredo Tovar hit consecutive singles in the 8th, and then Vaughn came in to score on a double from Matt Reynolds, while Tovar was thrown out trying to score on that double.

Pitcher Coverage

Tyler Pill

Pill started the game with a walk on 5 pitches, but then found his control, and worked quickly through the rest of the inning, with no damage allowed. The final two outs of the frame came on a pop out just beyond the infield, and a strikeout of Nate Freiman, who whiffed on all 3 pitches in the AB. Pill worked a 1-2-3 frame in the 2nd, and it looked like he was settling in for a nice start – he picked up another pop out and another strikeout in the frame. But then he left a fastball down the middle to Wendle with a runner on in the 3rd, which was deposited into the stands beyond the RF wall. But then Pill bounced back to retire 8 in a row as he worked 1-2-3 frames in the 4th and 5th innings. The Sounds used two singles and a double to score 2 runs off of Pill in the 6th, and then Matt Carson hit the first pitch of the 7th for a blast. One huge problem for Pill was that he managed a first pitch strike on only 14 of 30 batters faced, with 5 of those strikes put in play – a lot of AB’s ending after 1 or 2 pitches helped Pill stay in as long as he did.
