Recapish
The
2016 Brooklyn Cyclones have picked up exactly where the 2015 Cyclones left off,
with great pitching and no hitting. They really had no hitting to speak of in
this game, as two Yankees pitchers combined to make quick work of this Cyclones
lineup. Brooklyn scored a run and had 3 batters reach over the first
inning-plus, but the final 27 Cyclones batters were retired in a row.
For
the second straight game, Brooklyn took a 1-0 lead in the 1st thanks
to a run for Enmanuel Zabala. He reached on a HBP, eventually came around to
score on a wild pitch, and that was it for the offense.
The
pitching was the big story of the game for both sides, although I’ll be mostly
focusing on the two main Cyclones pitchers. However, one note of interest from
the Yankees side is that Josh Roeder came in and struck out 8 straight after
entering and finished with 10 total.
Harol
Gonzalez made his NYPL debut for Brooklyn and impressed, especially early.
Scouts near Amazin’ Avenue’s Steve Sypa
had his fastball 90-94 and his changeup 83-85 early. He allowed a 1st
inning hit and then retired 10 in a row before dealing with some trouble in the
4th and 5th inning. His 3rd inning was his
best, as he struck out the side on 12 pitches, picking up 5 swinging strikes along
the way.
A
two out double for Kane Sweeney came around to tie the game for Staten Island
in the 4th. Timmy Robinson knocked him in and then SI proceeded to
load the bases, but Harol induced a pop out to end the frame. An E3 opened the
door for another bases loaded situation in the 5th inning, and Harol
induced another inning ending pop out to end his night.
It
looked like Harol might give the Cyclones some real length early, but the long
4th and 5th innings put pressure on Bryce Beeler to have
a good game. Beeler was the piggyback starter for the game, and fortunately he
had a huge outing, which started with a 5-pitch 6th inning. Beeler
stayed efficient through the 9th, allowing just the one walk over 4
scoreless on 41 pitches. This was huge coming off Friday’s opener, which went
20 innings and wasted most of the Cyclones pen.
With
this game still tied going to the 10th, Adrian Almeida was called
upon next. He was a little wild Friday night, but was able to work around it.
Unfortunately the same could not be said Saturday night. He hit a batter,
issued a walk, uncorked a wild pitch, and then allowed the walkoff hit through
the left side.
With
their first series of the season done, the Cyclones welcome the Tri-City Valley
Cats into town to start the week. The series begins Sunday afternoon at 4:00
PM, with Merandy Gonzalez set to make his NYPL debut.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
There
were no hits, but here are some of the players putting the ball in play. They
didn’t stick with the side view for all of the Cyclones players, so I don’t
have a swing for everyone.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Bryce
Beeler had a couple of comebackers to deal with in the sixth.
Pitcher Coverage
The
SI Yanks don’t give many good looks at the pitchers, but they offered some
great shots of Harol Gonzalez and Bryce Beeler throughout the game.
