Recapish

Tyler Pill was absolutely dominant for Binghamton Wednesday night, shutting the Portland Sea Dogs out on just 4 hits and a walk over 8 terrific innings Wednesday night. The Binghamton bats provided all the offense he’d need in the 1st inning, erupting for 4 runs on 5 base runners, which is just one shy of what Portland managed against Pill. The win means that the B-Mets head into their off day on the heels of a series sweep and 4 straight wins.
Pill matched a career high by throwing 8 shutout innings, something he did with Binghamton in June 2014 – he also threw 8 innings once with Las Vegas, though he allowed 3 runs that start. Portland got off to a hot start against Pill, with 4 of the first 8 batters reaching safely, but then Pill settled down and retired 19 of the final 21 batters he’d face – one batter was erased on a double play. The 7 strikeouts were the most for Pill in any start since last May, and he was clearly able to ride the momentum from his last start: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R. He worked quickly, got ahead almost every PA (first-pitch strike to 72%!), and had a strong whiff rate. This is closer to what I expected from Pill at AA this year.
The offense finally seems to be clicking some, but there is still going to be some up and down with so many Double-A rookies on the team. Derrik Gibson has been a sparkplug for Binghamton at the top of their lineup, and he’s been very effective defensively on the left side of the infield. The B-Mets announced that Jeff McNeil has been diagnosed with a sports hernia, so expect Gibson to keep starting and batting at the top of the lineup. Cruzado kept up his recent power surge with a double, his third extra base hit in 4 games after 0 in his first 11.
I take a closer look at the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! The B-Mets are off Thursday as they travel to New Hampshire to open a weekend series with the Fisher Cats. Rainy Lara (1-2, 4.41 ERA) is scheduled to pitch in the opener on Friday night at 6:35 PM, and will be looking to bounce back from his rough out Saturday.

Scoring Highlights

Derrik Gibson sparked the B-Mets 1st inning rally with a leadoff double to RF. Gibson came around to score on an E4, the first of 3 Portland errors from the game. Dominic Smith would single Kyle Johnson home two batters later to give the B-Mets a 2-0 lead before an out was made. The next two batters would be retired, but then L.J. Mazzilli doubled the lead with a two run double to LF.

Mazzilli picked up his second hit of the game with two outs in the 3rd inning.

Smith led off the 5th with a single to CF, and then came around to score on Victor Cruzado’s first double of the year.

Mazzilli’s third hit of the game led to the final run of the game. He singled to CF with one out in the 8th, went to 2B on a passed ball, to 3B on an E3, and then scored on a groundout.
