Weird Day of Mets Minors Promotions, With More Likely Coming; Jhoan Urena to DL

Less than a year later, this signing is already looking very promising

Recapping the Mets minor league players who changed rosters yesterday, and an update on Jhoan Urena.

UPDATE: Amazin' Avenue's Jeffrey Paternostro said it's a hamate break in his podcast, at around the 49 minute mark

Friday started with the expected promotion of Michael Conforto from A+ with St. Lucie to AA with the Binghamton Mets, but the rest of the day’s moves were unexpected, and Jhoan Urena ended up on the 7-day DL in the FSL. First, a quick list of the moves made:
-       Jayce Boyd officially joined the 51s roster in Nashville
-       Michael Conforto was promoted to the B-Mets roster
-       Yeixon Ruiz was added to the B-Mets roster
-       Jhoan Urena was moved to the 7-day DL
-       Stefan Sabol was promoted to the St. Lucie roster
-       Alfredo Reyes was added to the St. Lucie roster
-       Tucker Tharp was added to the St. Lucie roster
-       Joe Tuschak was promoted to the Savannah Sand Gnats roster
*I used added for players I don't expect to stick with their new rosters for the remainder of the season

Urena had been out since leaving after a swing during his first AB on 5/22. The radio announcer reported mid-week that Urena had a sore left wrist, but that he had stayed with the team all week. At the time, he noted that Urena would’ve been moved to the DL if it were anything serious. Does Urena heading to the DL a week later suggest it is something serious now? I’m not sure, and we’ll probably have to wait until the Mets announce something or he comes back playing after a week, but I’ll update this if there is news.
However, even if the Mets had determined he would just need another few days to come back, it made more sense to move him to the 7-day DL yesterday than (say) Monday because of the roster moves made yesterday. The B-Mets needed another infielder, but Jeff McNeil is likely sticking around until the end of the first half (he should be an all-star, and the FSL ASG is in PSL), so Ruiz went up instead. Alfredo Reyes was the extra infielder added, but he is likely just an extra body until L.J. Mazzilli is eligible to be activated on Monday. Adam Rubin suggested L.J. would start with St. Lucie for a few weeks as he got his feet wet in games, but it won’t be long until he’s in AA, where he would’ve start 2015 if not for the suspension. Reyes would be skipping from Rookie ball to A+, and he’s only had 33 PA in the NYPL (the more advanced rookie ball class).
Conforto to the B-Mets roster made sense when Jayce Boyd got promoted, it was a move that everyone saw coming, and that everyone was waiting for. Stefan Sabol taking Conforto’s place in St. Lucie was the only other move I saw coming yesterday, as he was having his best season with Savannah yet (joined the Sand Gnats in 2013), and was the most ready outfielder the Mets have.
With Victor Cruzado still injured, PSL needed another outfielder, so the Mets added Tucker Tharp to St. Lucie’s roster. Tharp was the Mets 30th round pick from 2014, and he struggled in his pro debut, slashing .213/.263/.248 over 222 PA with Brooklyn.

The final move made was the addition of Joe Tuschak to the Gnats roster. This move might be permanent, as Tuschak played some with Brooklyn last year and is a former 6th round pick. However, he has never really hit much in the minors (his best season was a 97 wRC+ in the Appy League), and the Mets are due to add a lot of players to their organization in less than 10 days with the draft. The Mets also signed Casey Delgado from the Indy Leagues and added him to Savannah's roster earlier in the week, with Delgado providing a nice debut.
