Recap
After
building up a 3-0 lead over the first two innings Friday night, Luis Cessa gave
back all three runs in the bottom of the 2nd, as he was BABIP’d for
several hits early. But the B-Mets jumped back to a 4-3 lead in the top of the
3rd, and groundballs finding infielders gloves for outs behind
Cessa, who would only allow three baserunners over his final four innings.
Jared King had another big day at the plate for Binghamton, playing a key role
in two of B-Mets rallies. Matt Koch has done great since being moved to the
pen, as he’s up to 5 K: 0 BB, with 3 hits allowed in 5.2 scoreless innings
pitched. Jon Velasquez did a great job in his return to B-Mets closer role, and
his return will only strengthen a group that is currently rolling.
Cessa
continues to build up his prospect resume for Binghamton, working quickly and
showing some nice heat. He was also dropping in some nice curves throughout the
start Friday, but the umpire was pretty inconsistent with his call on the
pitch. The first five hits Cessa allowed were singles grounded through the
infield, so he wasn’t exactly giving up loud contact early. The two doubles hit
off him were hit loud, but neither led to any additional damage against Cessa.
I don’t get to watch any FSL games on MiLB.tv, but I listen to a lot of radio
coverage, and Cessa was reportedly hitting 96 MPH often early in his starts
with St. Lucie last year, but would generally lose velocity throughout the
start. This year he’s been sitting more low-90’s with his heat throughout the
start (per what the announcers report), but has the mid-90’s heat when he needs
it. He was pounding the bottom of
the zone with that heat in this start, which helped generate so many
groundballs.
This
series continues Saturday night, with Michael Fulmer scheduled to make the 6:35
PM start for Binghamton.
Jared
King picked up a hit in each of his first 3 AB’s Friday, including this single
to leadoff the game. King would steal 2B, and then come around to score on
Xorge Carrillo’s two-run single.
Gavin
Cecchini hit a one-out double in the 2nd, and then Jared King
brought him home with a single back up the middle.
Jayce
Boyd lined a one-out double in the 3rd, his 8th of the
year. Aderlin Rodriguez would drive him home with a single into CF, but
Carrillo was thrown out trying to go to 3B on the play.
King
picked up his 3rd hit with two outs in the 4th.
Cecchini
lined a one-out single into CF in the 6th.
