Recap
With
three major league caliber pitchers scheduled to pitch against A+-level
competition, it was expected that the St. Lucie Mets would at least get
top-notch pitching Saturday night, but Charlotte exploded for 10 runs off 17
hits, with plenty of that damage coming against the trio of Dillon Gee, Vic
Black and Bobby Parnell. Meanwhile, it was the Charlotte pitching that looked
too good for the Florida State League, especially starter Jacob Faria, who has
allowed just one run over his last two starts (13.2 IP, 7 H, 5 BB, 14 SO), both
coming against St. Lucie. Charlotte made this game a laugher against the normal
St. Lucie bullpen in the 7th, scoring 7 runs off of 7 hits. The Mets
bats came to life in the 9th, with Dominic Smith providing an RBI
double, but it was too little and too late in this one.
Dillon
Gee was rehabbing with St. Lucie due to the groin strain he suffered during his
last start with the Mets, and while he was pretty sharp, the defense behind him
wasn’t – they hadn’t committed an error the previous 7 games coming in – and
the Stone Crabs ran like crazy, with 9 stolen bases on the night (8 of which
came against the major league trio). His curveball was nearly unhittable on the
night, and he struck out 3 in a row in both the 1st and 2nd
inning. Of the 6 hits allowed, announcer Adam Mac said only 2 of them were hit
hard. He was bailed out in the 3rd when Michael Conforto made his
first of three great plays in the game.
Vic
Black hadn’t pitched since 4/18
with Binghamton, so it’s understandable that he was a bit rusty. Black was
sitting low-90’s with his fastball, but he was having trouble locating his
fastball. Black was bailed out by Conforto’s second nice play of the game.
Bobby
Parnell had a mixed outing, but continued to show staggered signs of
improvement. He threw some of his best sliders of the year, and reached 93-94
MPH with his fastball, but also hit 90-91 MPH a few times, and had poor control
of it. He hit 94 on the gun a few times in his first appearance against Tampa
earlier in the week, so his max fastball velocity is creeping up, but his
stamina is not there yet. He’s still only 13 months out from Tommy John
Surgery, with his other problems before that, and some pitchers take up to 18
months to get back to full strength (if at all), so any progress is good news.
Adam Mac noted that Parnell was very deliberate on the mound, taking a lot of
time in between pitches, and then to get set on the mound. This is something
that will not fly when he is promoted to a higher level, as they use the game
clock system at the AA level and above. Parnell was bailed out by Conforto’s
third nice play of the game.
