Recap
The
B-Mets and Fisher Cats were locked in a tight pitching battle for the first 6
innings Saturday afternoon, but then Binghamton used a 4-run outburst to pull
head for good. John Gant allowed a run on two hits in the 1st, and
then settled in for a great start, allowing only two more hits and two walks
the rest of the way. Adam Kolarek came in for a 3-inning save, allowing one
only hit during the appearance, and extending his scoreless innings streak to
14-straight. Every Mets batter had a hit in the game, with four players
provided two. It was not all good news for Binghamton, however, as Brandon
Nimmo appears headed for the DL.
Check
out the scoring highlights and more on Gant below. This series wraps up Sunday
afternoon at 1:05 PM, with Seth Lugo scheduled to pitch for Binghamton.
Gavin
Cecchini picked up his first hit of the game leading off the 1st,
but never moved beyond 1B.
Eudy
Pina and Cecchini led off the 3rd inning with consecutive singles,
and Pina eventually came around to score on a groundout.
Josh
Rodriguez got the 6th inning rally started with a triple to the RF
wall. Jayce Boyd and David Cooper would follow with back-to-back singles, and
then both came home on a single back up the middle from Aderlin Rodriguez. The B-Mets would collect three more
hits in the inning, but left the bases loaded.
After
Boyd led off the 7th with a single, Dustin Lawley doubled him home.
Pitcher Coverage
John Gant
Gant
had a very strong start against the Fisher Cats, hitting 91 MPH with his
fastball throughout the start, and getting some swinging strikes with each of
his slider, curveball, and changeup. He had to work around a couple of sloppy
play from Cecchini throughout the start, and a dropped fly ball from Pina in
RF, but nothing seemed to faze him in this game. Andy Fermin hit a one-out
double off of Gant in the 1st, and then came home to score on the
next pitch, but Gant just kept attacking and got groundball outs from the final
two batters of the frame. He worked a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, 3rd,
and 5th, although he had to pick someone off in the 3rd. I
thought he was squeezed on two pitches in his first walk, but then his second
walk came on five pitches, although it was raining pretty hard at that point. He
would get a visit from the pitching coach after the walk, as he was nearing 100
pitches, with rain, and the walk came after Pina’s error. He gets a lot of weak
contact, and has a nice curveball/changeup. He’s adding a slider to his
repertoire, and it looks like it can be another weapon for him in time, but it’s
not there yet.
Adam Kolarek
So,
I guess he’s back now? Let’s see how the league adjusts to him, but this is
promising.
