Recap
After
a longer than normal layoff since his best start of the year, John Gant
struggled at times Monday night, putting Binghamton in a 4-1 hole they couldn’t
hit their way out of. It’s not all on Gant though, as the B-Mets offense, which
averages 4.8 R/G, had plenty of scoring chances in this one, but just couldn’t
get the big hit. After retiring the first two batters of the game in short
order, Portland jumped on Gant for some two-out magic to take a 1-0 lead. The
inning should’ve ended with no damage after the back-to-back singles, as Oscar
Tejeda took off for 2B too early, and a good throw would have had him dead to
rights. But Gant threw the ball high and wide, and it sailed into CF, which
allowed the runner at 3B to trot home. The B-Mets pulled even in the bottom of
the 3rd, but Gant would give the lead right back up in the 4th,
as 6 of the first 7 batters reached safely against him, with the only batter
retired on a sac bunt. With runners on 2B and 3B and only one out, Carlos
Asuaje lined a one-hopper into LF, and the Sea Dogs sent the runner from 2B
home, but Jayce Boyd started a well-executed relay play with Dustin Lawley to
get the runner at home. Boyd would also be tested on a fly ball just shy of the
warning track, and while he looked awkward while getting turned around a couple
of times on the play, he still got to the spot early and made the catch. The
B-Mets would have some chances to score after the 3rd, as you can
check out below, but the Sea Dogs staff kept them off the board every time.
The
first hit off Gant in the 1st was well struck into right-center off
the bat of Jantzen Witte, who came into the game very hot. The next batter would
hit a soft liner that was just out of the reach of a leaping T.J. Rivera to put
runners on the corners, and things really snowballed from there. First, the
throwing error when they had Tejeda picked off. Then Gant walked the next two
batters, which led to a visit from the pitching coach. After the visit, he
finally ended the inning with a strikeout of Luis Martinez. He ended up needing
31 pitches in the 1st, throwing only 14 strikes, which likely took
its toll later in the game. He got back in control during the 2nd,
needing only 6 pitches to retire the side in order. He looked good in the 3rd
too, striking out two, including Witte, and working around a two-out double. He
was a little wild and hit hard in the 4th, allowing 3 singles, a
bomb and two walks. Pedro Lopez let him go back out there for the 5th,
and he’d work around a one-out error from Brandon Nimmo, although he only threw
8 of 15 pitches for strikes in the inning.
Although it wasn’t a pretty final
line, there were some positives from Gant, who skipped over the FSL this year
(in case you forgot). He bounced back for a strikeout after the visit from the
pitching coach in the 1st, and then worked aggressively in the zone
during the 2nd and 3rd. He was maxing out at 91 MPH,
which is better than the 88 MPH some reports had him maxing out on coming into
the year. On the down side, he couldn’t make a good throw to 2B in the 1st,
which doubled his pitch count for the inning, and appeared to get in his head.
Scoring Highlights
Brandon
Nimmo started his 3-hit day with a one-out single in the 1st, but
he’d be stranded on 2B.
Gavin
Cecchini lined a one-out double into the LF corner in the 2nd, one
pitch after lining one just foul down the LF line.
Nimmo
started the B-Mets only rally with a one-out double in the 3rd. He’d
advance to 3B on a single into CF from T.J. Rivera, and then come home on a Jayce
Boyd fielder’s choice.
Nimmo
picked up his third hit of the night with this two-out double in the 5th.
Boyd
led off the 6th with this double down the LF line – a popular place
for the B-Mets Monday night.

Nice job to get the flip for the out at 2B from Cheech, and then a great relay from T.J. |
