Recap
After
escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning with no damage allowed, Casey
Meisner settled in to allow only two more base runners the rest of his start,
striking out 10 along the way. Rome starter Alex Grosser was matching Meisner’s
zero’s through 4, and had yet to allow a hit to the Sand Gnats when the 5th
inning started. Jonathan Johnson changed that on the third pitch of the inning,
drilling a triple off the base of the RF wall, which was the hardest hit ball
of the game. The Gnats would scratch out two runs in the inning, but that was
their only hit in the frame. With Meisner nearing his pitch limit after 7, Jose
Leger went to his bullpen, with Ben Griset and David Roseboom holding onto the
shutout.
These
two play a single-admission double-header Friday, starting at 5 PM, with the
Sand Gnats scheduled to start Josh Prevost and Ricky Knapp.
Jonathan
Johnson led off the 5th with a triple, and then came home to score
on a wild pitch. Jon Leroux followed with a walk, and then ended up on 3B
thanks to two more wild pitches from Braves starter Alec Grosser, before Patrick
Biondi also walked. Biondi would steal 2B to remove the possibility of a double
play, and then Luis Guillorme hit an RBI groundout to the SS. The infield had
been drawn in to look for a play at home, but Albies bobbled the transfer, and
had to settle for the out at 1B.
Eudor
Garcia lined a one-out single into RF in the 6th.
J.C.
Rodriguez led off the 8th with a single into RF.
Pitcher Coverage
Casey Meisner
The
biggest mistakes of the start from Meisner were a pair of 4-pitch walks in the
1st inning that led to a bases loaded situation. Meisner also struck
out 3 in the 1st, giving him the confidence to just throw strikes
for the rest of the start, which was the advice his pitching coach gave him on
the mound after he fell behind 2-0 on the second batter he’d walk. After the 1st,
Meisner would only allow a two out single to LF in the 3rd, and a
one out walk in the 4th, finishing both innings with strikeouts
after the runner reached base. By my judgment, there were 3 hard hit balls
against Meisner: Becerra made a nice running catch on one at the warning track;
Biondi tracked one down in left center that stayed up, and a liner hit right at
Becerra.
Bullpen
Ben
Griset struck out the side, which is nice, but got into some one out trouble in
the 8th. With one out, a liner deflected off of his leg for an
infield single, and then Griset walked the next batter on four pitches. While
the Gnats had a meeting on the mound, Darwin Frias started warming in their pen,
but Griset bounced back to get the next two swinging. It was a pretty typical 9th
for the BOOM, who has been racking up K’s while not allowing many base runners.
I saw Eudor putting in the extra work at 3B pre-game, making a few plays like the first one above. He did commit a fielding error behind Meisner, and still needs to improve that area of his game, but it's good to know he's working on it.
