Recap
Luis
Cessa got better throughout his start Thursday night, but the early hole he put
Binghamton in was just too big for the Mets to overcome. The B-Mets had plenty
of chances to score throughout the game, totaling 13 base runners, but they’d
go just 2-13 with runners in scoring position, stranding 10 base runners total.
Adam Kolarek and Chase Huchingson were perfect out of the pen, giving the
B-Mets a chance to get the tying run to 2B with one out in the 9th,
but Jayce Boyd would ground into a game-ending double play. Fisher Cats starter
Taylor Cole deserves props for a solid start, his 3rd good effort
against the B-Mets of the year, which means the Binghamton bats should know him
well and yet he still was in command through the 5th.
Cessa
was uncharacteristically wild in this game, reaching four walks for the first
time since 7/3/2014, and just the third time in his minor league career. His
fastball command was lacking at times, and three of the walks came on 5
pitches, which is poor execution – you should be able to reliably throw a 3-1
fastball over for a strike. Otherwise, he was a groundball machine again, with
12 of 19 batted balls hit on the ground (63%). Unfortunately, three of the
balls hit in the air were responsible for all of the damage against Cessa – RBI
single on a soft liner into RF in the 1st, 2R-HR in the 2nd,
and leadoff double that came around to score in the 7th. The run in
the 7th is unearned because Xorge Carrillo was charge with a passed
ball after the double, which allowed Andy Fermin to move to 3B, and then come
home on a sac fly. His first strikeouts came after throwing consecutive 96 MPH
fastballs, and then his final three came on breaking balls. Despite settling
down in the middle innings, the only 1-2-3 inning from Cessa was in the 6th.
Overall, Cessa made the necessary adjustments to give the B-Mets a quality
start and some length, which is always nice to see from young pitchers.
Looks
like Adam Kolarek might be back, as he’s now thrown 11 consecutive scoreless
innings over his last 6 appearances, with two hits and two walks allowed,
against 8 strikeouts and a 21 GO: 3 FO. The improvements appear to be the
result of a mechanical adjustment he made after Kolarek was after another slow
start, on the heels of a lost 2014. Kolarek used to throw with an overhand
motion, but is now throwing from a ¾ arm slot.
Check
out the offensive highlights below. This series continues Friday night at 7:05
PM, with Michael Fulmer looking to even things in this four-game set.
Scoring Highlights
Eudy
Pina picked up his second double of the year with one out in the 3rd,

him over to 3B, and then Jared King singled him home for the first Binghamton
run.
Jayce
Boyd led off the 6th with his 12th double of the year,
and then scored on Carrillo’s only hit of the game.
