Recap
Duane
Below had been very good in all but one of his appearances for Las Vegas so far
this season, but he stepped it up a notch in Tacoma Tuesday afternoon, throwing
a complete game shutout on less than 100 pitches – aka, “the Maddux.” Below was
working quickly and hitting his spots extremely, and ended up doing something I
didn’t think was possible in the PCL. The 51s bats stayed relatively quiet in
Tacoma, but two runs was more than enough support in this one. Travis Taijeron
continued his hot season at the plate, with two hits, including a bomb to put
Las Vegas up 1-0. Taijeron would also make a nice defensive play at the RF
wall, robbing Franklin Gutierrez of an extra base hit.
The Las Vegas 51s are off Wednesday, and then head home to face Oklahoma City Thursday night, with Steven Matz scheduled to start.

Matt
Reynolds hit his 14th double with two outs in the 1st.
Travis
Taijeron hit his 7th homerun with two outs in the 2nd –
he’d add a single in the 7th inning.
Danny
Muno and T.J. Rivera hit back-to-back singles with one out in the 3rd,
but Muno was thrown out trying to advance to 3B.
Dan
Rohlfing hit his 4th double since joining Las Vegas in the 5th.
Rivera
reached on a throwing error leading off the 6th, and then came home
on Alex Castellanos’ 11th double of the season.

Below
looked like someone from a different era, pitching to weak contact all night by
working away at the knees, instead of trying to just strike everyone out. He
only reached a 3-ball count twice, falling behind 3-0 in both cases, and
allowing a base runner in both instances. The Rainiers would not get a runner
to 2B until the 9th inning, and it took an infield single deflecting
off of Below to allow that to happen – that was the second hit deflected off of
a 51s fielder, as Allen couldn’t handle a line drive in the 4th. By
my count, only 3 balls were hard hit against Below, with only one of those
falling in for a hit. The hardest hit out was lined off the bat of Franklin
Gutierrez in the 5th, but Travis Taijeron tracked it down with a
great catch at the wall. He didn't get many swinging strikes during the game, but Tacoma would chase his high fastball when he went there.
