Recap
The
Sand Gnats jumped out to a one run lead in the 1st Sunday afternoon,
but it was all down hill after that, as Scarlyn Reyes lost to the Rome Braves
for the third time this season. Savannah would pick up 7 more hits after the
first, including a pair of doubles from Vicente Lupo, but had numerous base
running mistakes throughout that cost them. In the 1st, Mora didn’t
break on a groundball to 3B with the infield back, and the ball deflected of
Jordan Edgerton into foul territory – the ball was sharply hit, and he would
come home to score, but he should be thinking break on contact with the infield
back. Lupo was thrown out after both of his doubles, first trying to score on a
single, and then trying to reach 3B on a groundout. Patrick Biondi was also
caught stealing in the game. The Braves managed to scratch out three runs
against Arias, and then add two insurance runs against Jimmy Duff in the 8th,
as they won the final two games of this 5-game set.
Check out more from this game below. The
Sand Gnats return home Monday night for a 7 PM game against Asheville, with
Corey Oswalt scheduled to pitch for Savannah.
John
Mora hit a one out triple in the 1st, and then scored Savannah’s
only run on a groundout.
Vicente
Lupo hit his first of two doubles in the 2nd, but he was thrown out
at the plate trying to score on a base hit from Biondi.
Luis
Guillorme led off the 3rd with a single back up the middle, but John
Mora started a double play groundout to kill the momentum.
Lupo
hit a one out double in the 5th, but would end up thrown out at 3B
in this inning.
Eudor
Garcia and Stefan Sabol hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the 9th,
but Wuilmer Becerra couldn’t keep the comeback alive.
Pitcher Coverage
Scarlyn Reyes
Scarlyn
Reyes turned in a strong overall start, but he didn’t pick up too many swinging
strikes, and got in trouble when he got wild in the 2nd and 6th
innings. In the 2nd, he allowed back-to-back singles to the first
two batters, and then threw two wild pitches with Erison Mendez at the plate,
allowing one run to score. Mendez would put the Braves ahead for good when he
followed with a single lined back up the middle. In the 6th, a one
out walk came back to hurt Reyes when the Gnats couldn’t turn a double play –
Eudor Garcia made a nice play at 3B, but J.C. Rodriguez was late covering the
bag and made an off balance throw to 1B.
