St. Lucie jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st, and held on tightly for most of the game, only extending their lead to 6-3 with two outs in the 7th. Jeff McNeil got his big day started with a bunt single in the 1st, and then the Mets loaded the bases for suddenly hot Dominic Smith. Smith delivered the only way he knows how, with a double, this one lined off the base of the LF wall to clear the bases. Lexington would scratch out a run in the 2nd and two in the 3rd to make it a 4-3 game, but then Miller Diaz found some control and locked things down through the 6th. Mike Hepple was summoned to protect the one run lead with two on and two outs in the 6th, but would load the bases with a walk to the first batter he faced. He’d escape the bases loaded jam when the next batter to hit a fly ball to the most reliable outfielder behind him, Champ Stuart, and then stuck around for a 1-2-3 7th. After two walks and a force out, Jeff McNeil’s fourth hit of the game would bring home the first insurance run in the 7th, and then two walks later, the Mets had another insurance run. Josh Smoker came in and continued to be extremely impressive with St. Lucie after a less than stellar stint with Savannah, striking out 5 of the 7 batters he faced.

Helmis Rodriguez (3-1, 2.27 ERA) @ Brad Wieck (1-4, 3.41 ERA)
vs. Asheville (19-25) at 7:05 PM
Yesterday: L 5-3 (Savannah, Asheville)
Today: W 5-1, Wieck (W, 2-4, 3.09 ERA) – 6.2 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 9 SO, 101 Pitches (72 Strikes), 4 GO: 3 FO
Lineup
2B – John Johnson – 1-4, R, SO
SS – Luis Guillorme – 0-2, 2 R, 2 BB, SO
3B – Jean Rodriguez – 1-2, BB, SAC
DH – Eudor Garcia – 0-2, R, 2 BB, SO
RF – Wuilmer Becerra – 2-4, 2B (9), RBI (18), SO
CF – John Mora – 0-3, R, BB, SO
C – Tomas Nido – 1-3, 2B (6), 2 RBI (8), BB
1B – Jon Leroux – 0-3
LF – Vicente Lupo – 1-3, SO
Bullpen:
Jimmy Duff (3.86 ERA) – 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 SO, 1 FO
David Roseboom (1.57 ERA) – 1 IP, H, BB, SO, 2 FO

Brad Wieck keeps getting better in the SAL, throwing one of his best starts against Asheville for an ‘easy’ 5-1 Sand Gnats victory. Wieck struck out the first batter of the game, but then allowed the next three batters to reach (single, RBI double down the LF line, walk), as the Tourists jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Wieck would retire the next 15 Asheville batters in a row, and Savannah had a 5-1 lead by the time another Tourist touched 1B safely. The Sand Gnats didn’t let Asheville hold a lead for long, scoring two in the first. Johnson led off with a single, and two batters later JC would lay down a sac bunt to put runners on 2B and 3B with one out. A Eudor Garcia fly out wasn’t deep enough to get a run in, but two runs scored while Becerra was batting: Johnson on a wild pitch, and then Becerra singled Guillorme home. A Guillorme walk got the 3rd inning rally going for Savannah, and he’d score without the help of a Savannah batter: wild pitch advanced him to 2B, throwing error on the pickoff attempt moved him to 3B, and another wild pitch brought him home. The Gnats would draw two more walks in the frame, which allowed Tomas Nido to come up with two on and two outs. He’d clear the bases with a double to LF after an Asheville pitching change. Wieck would allow two singles in the 6th, but he followed that with two strikeouts, stranding runners on the corners. He reached his pitch count with two outs in the 7th, so Jimmy Duff finished the frame and handled the 8th. Becerra added his ninth double of the year leading off the 8th, and then David Roseboom worked around a couple of base runners to finish the game in the 9th.

Minors MVP of the DayAderlin Rodriguez had a huge day on the same day it was announced he would be returning to full-time duty at 1B for Binghamton (David Cooper retired).

Minors Cy of the Day – Steven Matz was so good that Wally Backman had to take him out after 77 pitches to get his bullpen some work. Mm Mm Mm Matz! Can’t wait until the Mets make room for him at the big league level, although they’d have no depth behind him.
