Recap

The 51s won an afternoon game Wednesday behind a strong start from Darin Gorski, and big days at the plate for Eric Campbell and Kyle Johnson. Las Vegas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd and never looked back, although they’d tack on some insurance runs. After Gorski allowed a leadoff double in the 7th, Zack Thornton came in and bailed him out. Scott Rice started the 8th with back-to-back walks, but picked up a strikeout before being replaced by John Church, who would stick around for his first save since July 5, 2014.

Darin Gorski now has 5 very good starts for the 51s this year, but his overall line has been brought down by 2 very bad starts: he allowed 8 ER over 4 IP on 4/21, and 7 ER over 1.1 IP on 5/8, but has allowed 5 ER over 26.2 IP (1.69 ERA) in his other 5 starts. Those two starts are really bad, but 5 of 7 starts with 2 ER allowed or less is very good. Gorski worked a clean 1st and 5th, but dealt with base runners in the other frames. The River Cats scored their runs off him on back-to-back two-out hits in the 3rd, with Ehire Adrianza providing the RBI double to cut the 51s lead in half. Gorski wouldn’t allow another hit until the double off the bat of John Bowker leading off the 7th.
The 51s strung together 3 hits in the 2nd to take 2-0 lead, with Danny Muno providing a two-out single to bring home Eric Campbell and Cory Vaugn. The bats stayed quiet until Darin Gorski provided a two-out double in the 5th, which was followed by an RBI double from Kyle Johnson. Eric Campbell made it a 4-1 game in the 6th with his fourth PCL bomb of the year, launching it out to left-center field. Muno manufactured the 51s fifth run in the 7th, as he led off with a single back up the middle, stole 2B, and came home on an RBI single from Kyle Johnson.
Scott Rice struggled with his command for a third straight appearance, and he’s now thrown only 27 of 57 pitches for strikes over his last 3 outings. John Church has been rolling for a while now, and has become one of the 51s most reliable relievers. He allowed 4 ER in his first 3 appearances of the season (4.2 IP), but has allowed 4 ER in 11 appearances since (15.2 IP). Also, 3 of those runs came in an appearance on 4/23, when Wally Backman tried to push him for a third inning, even though Church had thrown an inning the night before. Church doesn’t have a high strikeout total, but has been having success by living on the edges with his fastball/slider combo.

The series continues Thursday night at 10:05 PM, with Duane Below scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
