I took a closer look at some unheralded pickups that are finding
success in the Mets farm system.
ICYMI,
Robert Gsellman was promoted
to AA, and John Gant is heading down to A+.
BP evaluator Chris Mellen posted an eyewitness account of Rainy Lara, and he was not very high on him – not exactly breaking, but he does think his fastball/slider could work as a ROOGY.

looked at the rehabbing
Mets.
Jayce Boyd has been promoted to AAA!
Cuban shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez has left the country, and reports suggest the Mets might be interested. He’s got gold glove quality defense, but Ben Badler suggests he’d be starting in A+.

The Mets couldn’t hold a 2-0 lead against the Flying Tigers
in the third game of their series against Lakeland, dropping back down to 3 games under .500. After a perfect
top of the 1st from Whalen, Jeff McNeil kept his hot streak going
with a leadoff double in the bottom of the frame. McNeil would score on a
fielding error by the Lakeland SS, but the Mets left the bases loaded in the
frame. Whalen stranded the bases loaded in the top of the 2nd, striking
out two in the frame. The speed of Champ Stuart helped force an E5 in the 2nd,
and he would come home to score on a groundout from rehabbing Travis d’Arnaud.
The Mets wouldn’t threaten to score again until the 9th. Whalen had rolled
through the 3rd and 4th, but ran into trouble in the 5th.
With two on and two outs, Whalen would allow a bomb to Raph Rhymes, which gave
Lakeland their first lead of the day. Whalen retired the next batter, but then
didn’t get a close call on a 3-2 pitch to Tyler Hanover, and allowed the next
batter to reach on a single. Apparently he never stopped talking on the mound,
which the home plate umpire didn’t like, because after allowing the single,
Whalen just walked off the mound – he had been ejected, though it took awhile
for the press box to learn why. In the 9th, Smith hit a two out double,
his 9th double in 12 games, and then came home on an RBI single from
Amed Rosario.

Bullpen:
Casey Delgado (W, 1-0, 0.00
ERA) – 4 IP, H, 3 BB, 7 SO, 59 Pitches (38 Strikes), 2 GO: 1 FO
The Sand Gnats got a walk-off win in their opener with
Charleston after battling through a tight pitcher’s duel. Sand Gnats starter
Ricky Knapp was making just his second start of the year, after starting the
season in the bullpen, but he’s been great in both (11 K: 2 BB over 9.1 IP, 1 R
on 7 hits allowed). Savannah would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd,
when John Mora hit a one out double and then came around to score on an E3. Leroux hit a grounder to the third baseman, and Mora broke for 3B after he threw across the diamond. The out was recorded at 1B, but then the first baseman threw the ball away trying to get Mora at 3B. The
River Dogs would tie it up thanks to their speed in the 4th. Dustin
Fowler hit a one out infield single to Johnson, stole 2B, and then came home on
a two out single to Becerra. That would be all of the scoring until the bottom
of the 9th. In the meantime, freshly signed Casey Delgado made his
minors debut with a bang. It’s not clear what his role will be with this club,
but he was clearly stretched out some, so perhaps he’ll join the rotation after
some promotions? He allowed a leadoff double in the 8th, but escaped
the inning with no damage allowed, stranding the bases loaded – he’d strikeout
two of the final three batters in the frame, with an intentional walk of Dustin
Fowler in between. Jon Leroux came up with one out in the 9th and made
sure this game didn’t go to extras, launching a walk off homerun to RF. His
walk off HR comes 20 days after he allowed a walk off HR as an emergency
pitcher in the 17th inning of a game.
Minors MVP of the Day
– Jon Leroux had only one hit Thursday night, but it was the one that ended the
game in Savannah with a Sand Gnats win.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Split decision, because I can’t choose between the efforts put forth by Luis
Cessa and Casey Delgado Thursday. I know nothing about Casey Delgado, but what
a minors debut!
