Recap
The
51s got one of Matt Bowman’s best efforts of 2015, but delivered one of their
worst offensive showings, as they ended up shutout in Tacoma. Bowman allowed 8
hits on the night and had 0 strikeouts, but 6 of those hits were singles, and
he did a much better job of keeping the ball down than in his bad starts.
Rainiers starter Justin Germano (a former major leaguer) was making only his 4th
start since being moved back to the rotation, but continued his dominant season
Sunday, allowing only 6 hits in 6 innings pitched, 5 of which were singles.
Logan Verrett struggled in relief of Bowman during the 7th, loading
the bases with 0 outs, and walking 3 in the inning. Jon Velasquez would bail
him out with a nice effort, and then Cody Satterwhite kept Tacoma at bay in the
8th, but there was no late rally from the 51s in the game.

but neither would advance further.
Pitcher Coverage
Matthew Bowman
Bowman
has now allowed 2 ER or less in 3 of his last 4 starts (with an 11-day DL
absence in between), and finished the 6th inning for the first time
Sunday. His early season struggles were due to a few factors: he was leaving
the ball up too much, lefties were crushing the pitches he left up, and he
faced some tough lefties in the Fresno lineup (faced Fresno in 2 of his first 3
starts, Preston Tucker and Jon Singleton burned him). He did a better job of
keeping the ball down in this outing, which is where he needs to live to
succeed. Unfortunately, he had a low swinging strike percentage and zero
strikeouts, which is a bad indicator for future success. He got burned for a
run in both innings he allowed an extra base hit. The double was on a nice
curveball that Bowman placed knee-high and on the outside corner, but Patrick
Kivlehan pulled it into the left-center field gap regardless – pulling that
pitch for a long double is a perfect example of why Kivlehan is so highly
regarded, and (likely) why he has struggled so far. The homerun was a fastball
mistake, as he left it thigh high and on the inside corner against a lefty.
