Jimmy Duff (S, 2, 3.43 ERA) – 2.1 IP, 3 SO, 3 GO

Brad Wieck threw his best start as a professional, and the Sand Gnats scratched out a couple of runs to complete the sweep of Augusta Wednesday night. Wieck entered with a 35 K: 8 BB ratio over his last 4 starts (21.1 IP), but a 4.64 ERA due to a few big innings allowed. He kept the strong K: BB rates going, and avoided any big inning in this start. All three hits off of him would go for doubles, but one runner was erased at 3B on a fielder’s choice groundout to Luis Guillorme, and the other two were stranded at 3B. The Sand Gnats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd without so much as a hit (or even a BB or HBP) in the inning. Jon Leroux reached on a fielding error, went to 2B on a wild pitch, 3B on a groundout, and scored on a sac fly. With runners on the corners and two outs in the 7th, Wieck was nearing his pitch count with the 9-hitter coming up, so manager Jose Leger went to Jimmy Duff, who’d pick up a strikeout to end any threat. The Gnats bats added an insurance run in the 8th, as Vicente Lupo, Jonathan Johnson, and Luis Guillorme hit consecutive two outs singles. Duff was great in his outing, retiring all 7 batters, including strikeouts of the first two batters in the 9th.

Minors MVP of the Day – He’s back baby! Michael Conforto hit a homerun in the 9th inning, with 2 strikes and 2 outs, to give St. Lucie a 4-3 lead that Akeel Morris would save. After a sluggish few weeks, Conforto is heating up again. #PROMOAT

Minors Cy of the Day – Brad Wieck has much better than his ERA/W-L record would suggest, as he’s up to a 30.1% K-rate after this start (11% BB-rate needs work). The big lefty was great Wednesday night, bringing a two-hitter into the 7th.
