Recap
The
Las Vegas 51s overcame a rough start from Matty Bowman to easily take the opener
against Sacramento Tuesday night. Bowman was not very good in his return to the
rotation, missing the strike zone all-night and giving up loud contact. He
mixed up his pitches well, and was once again fine against righties, but
lefties hit his fastball hard. On the plus side, his pitches were mostly
missing low, which is where he wants to live, but Sacramento batters weren’t
biting. The River Cats jumped on Bowman for a 3R-bomb in the 1st,
and then strung together 3 hits for their 2 runs in the 2nd. He’d
walk the bases loaded in the 3rd, but was able to keep things from
getting further out of hand.
The 51s batted around and then some
in the bottom of the 3rd, with six hits, including doubles from Eric
Campbell (2 RBI double), Dan Rohlfing (3 RBI), and Danny Muno (2 RBI). That’s
when Logan Verrett came in and set a different mood for this game, as he worked
quickly and effectively through the Cats lineup, featuring a nice
fastball/slider combo – he’d end the 6th by blowing a 93 MPH
fastball by rehabbing Hunter Pence. The 51s would add a run in the 6th
thanks to a no-doubter from Campbell, and then Muno and Darrell Ceciliani hit
back-to-back doubles for 3 runs in the 7th. Jack Leathersich got
some bad looking swings and didn’t walk anyone in the 8th, which
puts him up to 20 K: 3 BB in 11.1 IP for Las Vegas this year. Cody Satterwhite
struggled against the first 3 batters in the 9th, allowing 2 bombs,
including a mammoth shot off the bat of Hunter Pence. He’d bounce back to
retire the next 3 batters in a row, showing slightly better velocity to end the
frame.
The series continues Wednesday
afternoon, with Darin Gorski scheduled to take the mound at 1:35 PM ET. Check
out full-game pitch coverage below, with pitch velocities coming from the Las
Vegas scoreboard.
