Recap

The Sand Gnats got some great pitching early, and then fought back after the Drive tied it late to win their 3rd straight game Thursday night. New addition Eudor Garcia continued his hot start, with four hits, including two doubles off the wall – he has now hit a double off the LF wall, the CF wall, and the RF wall. Brad Wieck had his best start of the season, striking out a pair of batters in each of the first four innings, and needing only 81 pitches to complete 5 very good innings. Jimmy Duff was the first to come in from the Sand Gnats pen, and all he did was throw an immaculate 6th inning, which you can check out below. Josh Smoker look really good working around a throwing error from Garcia in the 8th – Garcia threw the ball high on a very close play at 1B – striking out the final two Drive batters in the frame. But he got into some trouble in the 9th, and then couldn’t get the 3rd out against consecutive batters, so manager Jose Leger brought in David Roseboom to conserve the 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, the BOOM allowed a single to the first batter he’d face, before escaping with a loss. The Gnats would load the bases with nobody out in the 10th, but failed to score, which was the third time a bases loaded opportunity went to waste. After a scoreless 10th from the BOOM, Jon Leroux would provide a big, two-run triple to put Savannah back in front. Darwin Frias ran into a little trouble during the bottom of the 11th, but was aided by a heads up play from Patrick Biondi in RF, who was able to double a runner off of 1B for a game-ending double play.
The series wraps up Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Casey Meisner scheduled to pitch for Savannah.

Scoring Highlights

The first three Sand Gnats batters reached in the 2nd, with two of them eventually coming home to score – Stefan Sabol walked, Jon Leroux singled into CF, and then Eudor Garcia doubled into RF.

John Mora hit a one-out triple in the 3rd, but was thrown out trying to score on a groundout from Jean Rodrgiuez. The Gnats would leave the bases loaded in the 3rd.

Patrick Biondi and Vicente Lupo hit back-to-back singles leading off the 4th, and then Tyler Moore would reach on his sac bunt attempt to load the bases with nobody out. But the top of the lineup couldn’t get any of the runners home, going down on a groundout, fly out, and then another groundout.

Garcia picked up his second hit in the 5th, pulling a single into RF on the ground.

Garcia’s third hit came leading off the 8th, and he’d eventually come around to score on a two-run single from Luis Guillorme.

Garcia would start the 10th with a double, already his third of the season (he debuted Wednesday!). The Gnats would again load the bases with nobody out in the 10th, and again they couldn’t get any runners home (happened three times in the game).

Jon Leroux picked up the big hit in the 11th, driving in two runs with his triple of 2015. Jonathan Johnson, who came in to run for Garcia in the 10th, would follow with an RBI single into RF for a little extra insurance.
